I arrived at Jeremiah and Sadie's house around ten o'clock the next evening. They lived off the road on Lake Ontario, just like me. I got out of the car I had previously stolen from Two Harbors, Minnesota, and made my way to the front porch. Knocking on the door three times, I took steady deep breaths. Being away from Bucky was giving me terribly anxiety, or at least worse anxiety than I already had. The door opened to reveal Sadie, holding her rounded belly.
"Oh my god. Widia!" She threw her arms around me, careful not to hurt the baby.
"Hey, Sadie." I closed my eyes as I put my face into her shoulder. "You look so great."She pulled away and held me at arms' length.
"Come inside. I want to make sure you're okay."
"I am, Sadie." I assured her but allowed Sadie to tug me into the house. I closed the door behind myself and locked it. In the bright lighting of her living room, I knew Sadie could see the fading bruises on my cheek and temple.
"What happened to you?"
"Nothing. I'm okay." I assured her.
"I thought you were adamant on not coming to see me. Is anyone else with you?" She moved towards the window, but I pulled her away.
"No. No one else is with me. I'm alone."My phone vibrated from inside the pocket of my jacket. "Give me a second, Sadie." I told her before answering the call. "Hey, sweetheart."
"You didn't call.... And I got worried."
I heard someone laugh in the background, teasing Bucky.
"Shut up, Wilson."
"I forgot to call you, sweetie. I'm sorry. I'm here at Sadie's though."
"Oh. Okay. I'll let you go then."
"Call me later on tonight before you go to sleep."
"I will. Be safe, doll."
"Always." I tucked my phone away and brushed my hair back, then met Sadie's gaze. She was grinning from ear to ear. "What?"
"Who was that?" She sat down on the sofa and motioned for me to sit with her. I hesitated, knowing standing would make me feel better but it probably wouldn't make her feel too good. It would make her feel uneasy, like something was wrong. I sat down beside her and took off my jacket.
"It was a friend."
"One of the people you're with now?"
"I can't tell you about them, Sadie." I spoke softly, shaking my head.
"Then don't. Tell me about this guy though."
I bit my bottom lip and looked down at my hands.
"I feel like it's wrong to be with him, Sadie."
"Why?"
"Because I still love Zach." I whispered, looking up to meet her gaze. "And I'd never ever betray him like that. Not in a million years. You know that."
"I know, baby." Sadie reached over and put her hand on mine hesitantly. She knew I used to dislike physical contact. When I didn't pull away from her, she held my hand comfortingly. "You loved him like he was your moon and he loved you like you were his tide. But he would understand if you started dating someone else. He was a kind, sweet, and understanding man, Widia. He'd want someone there for you."
"But everyone always talks about how they never thought I'd move on." My voice cracked as I looked down. "They all saw how much I-I loved him—,"
"Those people don't mean anything though, Widia. You deserve to be happy and that smile I just saw on your face when you were talking to you-know-who tells me you are happy with him."
