"Your room is at the end of this hall. It's not far from mine."
[Y/N] looked bewildered at the thought. I smirked.
"What?" I asked. "Did you expect us to share a room?"
She blinked a few times then shook her head. Her confusion turned to a polite grin in a split second.
Typical.
"No. Separate rooms are very considerate of you, Jimin. Thank you."
Another hollow smile. How I hated those. She was good at them, too. Sometimes even I couldn't tell if she was genuine or not.
I dropped her arm from mine, straightening the sleeve. "You may want to change out of your wedding gown before the party, yes?"
She nodded. "It is a bit too much, isn't it?"
I didn't respond. Her eyes dropped. What was I supposed to say? Nah, leave it on. You look so incredibly uncomfortable. Stay that way.
She could barely breathe in that thing. It only made sense to change into something else.
But I couldn't say that. Not with [Y/N].
Something about those fake smiles kept me from saying a lot of things. I'd seen too many of them. I didn't trust them.
"Will you be here to escort me?" she asked.
"I –"
"Of course he will!" a voice boomed behind us.
Pastor Lee. Naturally.
"What man wouldn't be thrilled to take his bride to their wedding reception?" he said, placing a firm hand on my shoulder. "We'll wait right here for you, my dear."
She nodded in acknowledgement, with a lingering glance towards me before walking away. What was that for?
I shook Pastor Lee's hand off my shoulder. "Where did you come from?"
"My Creator's imagination."
I rolled my eyes. "On a non-spiritual level, Pastor."
He chuckled. "Your parents were simply concerned you may be lost on your new duties as husband. They sent me to be your guide."
"They sent you to watch me."
"Like fireworks on Independence Day."
I snorted.
"The arrangement is hard on you both, I know." he said.
"Do you now? Do you often officiate marriages of convenience?"
He nudged me. "Of course, child! You know as well as anyone that royal marriages are 99% convenience and politics."
"And my parents?" I asked.
I wasn't looking at him, but I could feel him searching my face. In the corner of my eye, I saw him smile for whatever reason.
"You've placed too much expectation on the 1%, Prince Jimin." He caught himself. "Well, I suppose I should watch my words. You're a king now, aren't you?"
He patted my back in celebration. I cringed.
I'm not qualified to be king.
And [Y/N] shouldn't have been forced to be my queen.
As if she heard my thoughts, she appeared back before us. Instead of that white gown, she was wearing a navy blue off-shoulder lace dress. It accented her curves well. I couldn't say she was a bad dresser.
But how could I expect any less from a woman obsessed with appearances?
I held out my arm. "Shall we?"
She looked down at it, wrapping her hands delicately around my bicep. With a small smile, she nodded.
I squinted my eyes at Pastor Lee. Happy now?
His wrinkly old smile told me that he was.
I exhaled as we walked down thehallway to the reception ballroom. What for? To have a room full of diplomats congratulate me on my forced marriage? Ha. No, not interested, thanks.
But really, that wasn't the worst part to me.
I just didn't want to see him.
