I picked up the shiny piece on the ground and wiped away the excess dirt so I could read it. The name David was engraved into it and I knew for sure it was my dad's dog tag. I took it and put it in my pocket where I also stored my pocket watch.
I could leave through that hole, but I had no clue where it went.
After debating for a bit, I wasn't ready to leave yet. I took the motorcycle back to the garage with the lockers and checked around for something I might've needed.
As quietly as I could, I opened each and every locker. The only useful item I found in the lockers was a hatchet which looked barely used.
Clem's bag was beginning to fill up. It was filled with a notebook, 2 pencils, 1 pen, a candle, her pistol, a lighter, 3 drawings, and one photo in it already. It was quite small for a backpack and I barely squeezed the hatchet into the tight space.
I took out the pistol to make room for the hatchet and decided to keep the gun on me. I was more protected this way and also had 2 clips of extra ammo, in case anything tried to jump me.
The last thing I had as a storage area was my bag. I didn't pack much, just 2 clips of ammo, my playing cards, an empty water bottle, and 3 cans of beans for the rations that day.
I looked around the garage one last time and found something extremely useful that I couldn't believe I missed.
I walked over to a bucket on the ground, and picked up a siphon pump. This is exactly what I needed.
With this pump, I could use it to extract gas for the motorcycle. That'd mean I'd also have to find abandon vehicles that haven't been salvaged.
It was better than nothing. I didn't want to place it in my bag, and instead took some rope near the pump and tied it securely to the motorcycle. Well, mostly securely.
It was time for to ditch. I took the pocket watch again to check the time.
6:25 am
I didn't even realize I spent 25 minutes in this garage.
I had to leave through that hole that my dad left from. There wasn't enough time for me to head all the way back to the front gates. The motorcycle would've made too much noice so I couldn't have gotten to the gates undetected.
I turned on the engine and left through the hole. Clem had only left around 10 hours ago. She couldn't have been too far. I could still pick her up and tell her everything I knew about AJ.
I left through the hole. I didn't explore much of New Richmond once we settled here. There were restrictions and boundaries. I tried circling New Richmond to see if I could find the entrance and follow the road.
Circling this place wasted more gas than needed and attracted a few walkers, but luckily I found the gate. I got off the motorcycle and took off my beanie.
I liked the feeling of fresh air getting to my head. It really did feel like I was clearing it up.
Finally I took a seat on the tire that I sat on when Clem left and thought to myself:
Is this even a good idea? What if I died? God, I hope Clem's okay...
I tried to drain my mind of bad thoughts and just continued forwards. I needed a second to get a feel at what I was doing. I was actually about to do this.
Who would've thought a 14 year old kid could make it so far in this mess.
I got up and hopped on the motor bike... turned the key... and left
