I stuttered, trying to get the words out of my mouth. I didn't know if I wanted to tell her how much I missed her or anything, and I definitely didn't want to ruin our friendship.
"I was wondering about the photos you kept again. So uh could you tell me more about them?" I asked
"Well," she took a pause. "this man, Lee, found me in a little tree house when I was 8. I'd thought my parents were coming home, so I spent 3 days in that tree house." she said.
She went on to explain how she saved Lee's life when her baby sitter turned and attacked him.
"Woah, so you just trusted him?" I asked.
"Yeah, he was my only hope. Without him, I wouldn't have known how to shoot a gun, or keep my hair short." she said.
She then explained how they met up with other people and stayed at a motel, and even how she almost ate human meat.
It all seemed pretty messed up in my mind, and I wondered how she could endure these experiences.
"So did you eat it?" I asked.
"No, Lee ran downstairs and told me not to do I listened. He... he did make Larry eat it, but Larry was an asshole that kind of had it coming to him."
She explained Savannah and how she left Lee.
"Then I made the worst decision. I... I left Lee to look for my parents." she said.
"Yeah, and then what happened?" I asked.
She turned and faced me instead of the tent's door and started, "I... I left the house with this other man who said he had my parents. And I left."
I didn't say anything, I didn't know what was going to happen next. It felt like a story, a story in the books, but this one was real.
"I followed him to the hotel and he locked me in a closet. I... I couldn't get out. Then Lee came."
"Lee must've really loved you." I pointed out.
"Yeah, he really did."
She started to tear up and looked downwards instead of at me. She had lost the only father figure she had, and it made me feel grateful that I still had my dad alive and Javi to look up to.
I let her take a pause until she was ready to speak again. She wiped away the tears, and started again, "I, I took a lamp and hit the man, and then he started to hit Lee. I was so scared. I took a gun and shot my first shot at a living person."
"And you were only 8?" I asked.
"No, 9 actually. It was around the time of my birthday when it happened." she replied.
I completely forgot that we even had birthdays anymore. Everything was so different. I could remember that my birthday was coming up soon, but I didn't want to interrupt her thoughts.
"Then I saw them. I saw my parents. Dead. And..." she said as she started to tear up again.
"And that's when Lee told me he was bitten. And... and that I had to leave him. I had to handcuff him to the railing. And let him die in peace." she said.
I laid there next to her, and let her rest her head under my arm. She pulled her face to my chest and laid there.
"I'm, I'm sorry Gabe."
"Don't be, you're tougher than anyone I've ever met."
She stopped crying, and around 10 minutes later, she was asleep. She fell asleep with her face on my chest, and I could feel my heart pounding faster than ever before. I really did like Clem.
I took the candle with my other arm and blew out the flame. I couldn't see Clem anymore, but I tried my best not to move as much so she wouldn't wake up.
My jacket was on the ground, around my feet, and I decided to pick up the jacket with my feet and use it as a blanket for Clem. I turned, and placed my forehead against hers, and slowly fell asleep, with the biggest smile on my face.
