We stood up to get a closer look. It looked like a man, but we couldn't assume just yet. The sky was darkening from the pinkish color. And the shadow of the person was darkening along with the sky.
"Who is that?" Clem said, putting her hand on her forehead and squinting in the direction of the person.
"I can't really tell." I said.
We sat down again and were in the same position as before. She rested her head on my shoulder as I wrapped my arm around her waist and just stared into the distance.
"Do you think it could be..."
The gate started to open and interrupted me. Javi walked out and saw us cuddled up behind the tire.
"Are you kids doing alright?" he said with a huge grin on his face.
We both looked up, "Yeah, but look Javi," Clem said pointing at the person walking towards us."
"Should we be scared?" Javi asked.
"No I think we might know them," I said.
"Alright. I dropped off the food rations in your room, Gabe. You two make sure to eat alright? And don't get too crazy." he said, winking at us.
He left back through the gate. Clem and I had completely forgotten about the figure. We looked again to see that it was running towards us. I could finally recognize the shape of him. It was Brian.
"Clem... Clem that's Brian!" I said, "but... where's Nick?"
"I don't know. Let's start walking towards him." she replied.
We got up from our spot and headed straight. I liked the feeling I had a little bit ago. But I couldn't complain, I had her next to me which was all I could've asked for.
We headed towards the bridge for a few minutes and could see him sprinting towards us. It was a few minutes before we could hear him yell, "Clem! Gabe!"
He'd finally reached us.
"I... I..." he said, trying to catch his breath.
"Where's Nick?" I asked.
"Let's... let's walk over there." Brian replied.
It wasn't long before we started to head back to New Richmond. A few minutes into the walk, he finally recovered his breath and was able to speak clearly again.
"Guys. We need to go back." Brian said.
"What, why?" I asked.
"No way. Brian we can't. Gabe and I are leaving in the morning tomorrow and we can't go back. What happened anyways?" Clem said.
"Nick... he, he..."
"Nick what? Dammit just tell us." I said out of frustration.
"Alright. When you left, we grabbed our bags and started heading this way. I think your motorbike caused so much noise that the walkers were all over the road. We did our best." Brian said.
"No... is he," I began.
"No. No no no. He's alive." Brian replied.
"How can you be so sure?" Clem asked.
"Look. The walkers started to pour all over the road. There were hundreds. We'd never seen so many walkers in one place. Remember when you left? You took half of our stuff and we had the other half. Nick has it. All the ammo, food, everything. He slid me a pistol before we split, but he yelled and told me he'd be back. I haven't seen him since." Brian said.
"Okay... well he could always show up. You can wait here outside the gate." I said.
"Wait, how did you even get here? How did you escape?" Clem asked.
"I dipped into the woods and followed the road behind the trees. And now I'm here, safe and still not bitten." he said.
"So do you wanna wait or look for him?" Clem asked.
"No. I had one motivation. To come here and see my boy Weston, remember? You said he was here. And it's been years." Brian said.
"Yeah. I haven't seen him since we came back. But I'm sure he's here." I said.
"Alright, so it's settled," he said, turning around to see if Nick was there.
"Nothing." Brian said.
We arrived at the gate at last and opened the gate into New Richmond.
We arrived at the fountain where we sat down.
"Hey Brian, look, you can talk to Javi and find out where Weston is. But I don't know if you'll get any food rations today. You'll probably have to work for it." Clem said.
"Yeah, Javi is my uncle. He'll love your company." I said.
"I'm willing to work for food. Anything. Hopefully me, Weston, and Nick can all work in the same area." Brian said.
"Look, there's Javi, there's your chance Brian." Clem said.
"Hi, I..." Brian began.
"Just wait. Give me a second. I've gotta talk to these two real quick." Javi said.
"What's up?" I asked.
"We have a visitor at the gate. You said you knew him? He was about this guy's height and had brown hair. You know anything?" Javi asked.
"Hey! That's Nick! It has to be." Brian blurted out.
"Hi I'm Brian. And I'm a friend of these two. They led me here and I'm thankful to have met you." he said, introducing himself.
Javi and Brian shook hands.
"It's great to meet you." Javi said.
"Look I was wondering if you knew anything about Weston? His last name's Beltz." Brian asked.
"Yeah, he guards the armory here. Why?" Javi asked.
"Holy shit. It's been years since we've seen him." Brian said.
"Who's 'we'" Javi asked.
"My friend Nick is here. You said it remember? He's at the gate." Brian replied.
"Thanks Javi." Clem said, getting up from the fountain.
"Yeah, we can show him around and bring him to the gate." I said.
"Great. Look we could use some help in the armory too. We're always looking for more men to guard this base." Javi said.
"That's great news. I'll be there first thing tomorrow." Brian said.
Javi left us with Brian. He seemed extremely eager to arrive with Nick and finally meet Weston. The last time I had seen him was before I set out to find Clem.
We walked to the gate where we saw three men surrounding one guy in the back.
"Nick? Nick!" Brian yelled.
"Holy shit, how did you get outta there?" Brian asked.
"Hey hey hey, who are you?" one of the men asked.
"I'm Brian, I'm here with these two." he said, pointing back at us.
"Okay, It seems like you know this guy. Alright men, head back to your stations."
Just like that they dispersed into their areas.
When they met they did a hand shake which led to a bro hug between them.
"Damn. That was fucking insane. Yo, now where the fuck is Weston then?" Nick asked.
They turned around and looked at us, then they looked past us. Their jaws both dropped.
"Holy shit. It's really him." Brian said.
