Chapter 20 - Setting Up Camp

Gabe's POV

As we walked back to New Richmond, we started to open up and explain our pasts to know each other better.

Brian explained how he and Nick were from the same city in South Dakota when they were young. When they were about my age, they both had moved, Nick to Nebraska and Brian to Texas.

"So how did you even end up in Virginia?" I asked.

Nick replied, explaining how they were having a vacation on the beach when it happened.

"Then as we were in the car headed back to our hotel, I hit one of those things. We thought it was a person. I was driving." Nick explained.

I had learned a lot about their past. They asked Clem about what she'd been through, but she evidently refused to tell them too much. She mentioned Lee and her being 8 or 9, but that was pretty much it.

I grew comfortable around them. I finally had some friends I could relate to 'cause they were once my age.

We walked for about 7 hours and took a few resting breaks, but Clem decided that we should move quickly. As the sun was beginning to set, we pulled over on the road and made a little camp.

In one of the duffel bags was a small sized tent that they pitched up in the woods. We stayed in the forest, but also close to the road just in case anything happened in the next few hours.

Clem and I had made a campfire while Brian and Nick pitched the tent and built a tent using the blankets, sticks, and rope that they had brought along.

"I'd always wanted to be in the film industry growing up, but being an engineer was always my second choice." Brian said as he proudly built the tent from scratch.

I checked my pocket watch to see that it was 7:32 pm. It was quite dark outside after the sun decided to slowly set.

Clem and I agreed to take the tent while Brian and Nick took turns on watch, telling us not to worry about it. Their reasoning was that we'd reach New Richmond tomorrow evening if we slept early and left this camp early.

I took off my shoes and my beanie and stepped into the tent. It was a grey color and the inside seemed bigger than it did on the outside. Since they took the blankets to pitch their own makeshift tent, we had nothing to use as pillows or blankets ours.

Nick and Brian would take turns staying in the makeshift tent and keeping watch so they'd both get some rest.

I sat near the edge of the tent with my knees up to my chin and waited for Clem to come. It was definitely big enough to fit the both of us here.

She finally took a step in, squatting so that her head wouldn't hit her head on the roof of the tent.

"Hey Clem," I said.

"Hey Gabe,"

She took a seat on floor next to me.

"It's pretty tight in here, but I guess it'll do." she said.

"Yeah, it's alright. I can leave if you want me to, maybe help them out on watch?" I suggested.

"No, you don't have to, it'd be nice to have some company for a change."

My face grew slightly red. Good thing it was dark in here.

"Oh uh, I left a candle in your bag if you wanted some light. I've got a lighter here,"

I pulled out a lighter from my jacket pocket. I decided it'd be a better idea just to take off the jacket and reveal the slightly dirty white shirt I wore underneath.

"That'd be nice. Thanks,"

Clem snuck her head out of the tent to grab her bag. Meanwhile, I grabbed the lighter, ready to light it.

She pulled her head back and grabbed the whole bag, taking out the candle.

I took the candle from her hand and looked up at her as she sat back down. I lit the candle and set it to the right of me, opposite of the tent's entrance.

I liked the way her face seemed to glistened in the candle's light.

"Hey uh, Clem," I said, breaking the silence between us.

"What's up Gabe?" she replied.

"I uh. I just wanted to talk." I replied

She laid down on the tent's ground, using her own arm for a pillow. She faced towards the zip up door, away from me. I also laid down, leaving the candle safely in the corner.

"What about?" she asked.

"I uh..." I began.
