I didn't know what I wanted to put in my letter to my dad. I thought over it and just started to write whatever I felt I needed to get off my chest.
When I started to write again, Nick took the plastic bag with the bird in it and opened the front door while saying,
"Gabe, tell Brian I'll be back in a bit. I gotta get this to Clint before he gets pissed. When he comes downstairs tell him alright?"
"Okay."
He left. Brian went upstairs and went into one of the bedrooms that I saw earlier. I just decided to stay downstairs, in the living room on the couch. I grabbed the notebook and pencil and continued to write.
Hey dad, it's Gabe. And I wanted you to know that I was here, but you don't have to worry about me. I've been here with Brian and Nick, the 20 year olds, and I don't know if you know them, but Nick is the taller white guy with brown hair and Brian is his Asian buddy with jet black hair. They used to live here. Anyways I just wanted to let you know that they've been letting me stay at their place. They haven't found out that I was your son and I saw you and Clint running the place. I didn't want you to worry about me anymore,
As I wrote that, a tear slowly slid down my left cheek and I soon realized I was tearing up. My vision was blurred from the tears and started dripping all over the paper.
I had to say goodbye to my dad. He was my real father and... I'd known that I'd miss him, but I didn't know it'd be this much.
I decided to just keep on writing.
I came to get Clem and bring her back. Back to New Richmond. Dad if you ever want to come back, I'm sure Javi would forgive you and Dr. Lingard would appreciate your company again.
Hope to see you soon,
Love GabeI folded up the letter and slipped it into my backpack and waited to leave it here until tomorrow. I didn't want Brian or Nick to know I was David's son or even that I knew Clint before.
I guess they've kept the place running so I shouldn't disrupt the order here at Stafford that much.
I went upstairs to check on Brian and slowly opened the door and peeked through.
"Brian?" I said while opening the door.
He was laying in his bed, looking at a photograph.
"What up?" he said as he looked up.
"What's that you're holding?" I asked.
"Just a picture of the good old days." he said, handing me the photograph.
I looked at it. It was a picture of 5 guys and one guy cropped into the middle of the picture. I just assumed were his friends before the apocalypse.
Brian spoke,
"I know it doesn't look like a lot, but this is pretty important to us. It's the only photo evidence we've got left from our past that we know of."
"Yeah. I know what you mean. Clem had some photos and drawings that I thought she would've liked."
"Yeah. Family isn't just blood anymore. It's who you care about and who cares about you."
I knew what he meant. I was fortunate to know about my dad and my stepmom were both alive today.
"I know what you mean."
While I tried to finish the conversation, someone knocked on our door.
"Gabe you stay up here again. I don't want what happened to Clem, happen to you too."
he said to me as he went downstairs to check the door.I did what I did last time and just stood near the stairwell.
He opened the door. It was Nick, and this time he came back with supplies.
"Leader Clint was impressed with what we brought. So impressed that he gave us 4 cans of food for dinner tonight instead of 3."
I walked downstairs to see what had happened.
Brian spoke,
"I think we're set. We can eat three and save one for our trip once we escape."
We gathered in the living room and placed the cans on the table. All three of them were beans, but I didn't complain. Any type of food was good food during this time.
Brian took out his pocket knife and opened the cans.

30 minutes later
--------------------When we were finished, Brian headed upstairs again while Nick took the downstairs room. Despite the house looking large on the outside, the house itself was quite small inside.
I just decided to crash on the couch and hope no one bothered during the night. I usually slept without too many clothes on, but I decided to be respectful and just sleep in what I had at the time. Before going to sleep, I blew out the candles that lit up the room and shut the blinds so no one could look through.
I walked back to the couch and laid down.
It had been a long day. I woke up at around 4:00 am, just this morning, to look for Clem, and somehow I've already made it this far. Javi would've been proud and I think he had faith in me because he didn't go after me.
I thought about tomorrow. I would finally see Clem thanks to the help of these two strangers. The only problem was getting her out of the jailing facility that they held. I'm sure we'll have some kind of plan by tomorrow.
I checked my pocket watch. It was a little too dark to read the numbers, but I moved it around until I could read it. 11:47 pm.
It had been quite a while since I last slept and once I set my head down and closed my eyes, I was completely out of it.
