"She... she what?" I asked quickly.
Brian replied,
"She was taken into the same jail facility that we were taken into when we first came here. Usually that means that she has to do chores for the town with no rewards or payments except for the little food rations that they get."
I was shocked. Clem usually never went down this easily without a fight. Surely she would figure a way out.
Nick spoke.
"Yeah so look, we can help you out if you help us out. It'll be for the next 2 or 3 days, and all we need you to do is get all of our supplies out of these walls while unnoticed."
"O...okay. I've got..."
I was cut off in the middle of my sentence by two knocks on the door.
"Gabe," Brian whispered, "get upstairs and hide real quick. We've gotta talk to the leaders about today."
"Okay. I'll come down when it's clear."
I slowly walked up the stairs. It was fairly tight between the two walls. As I got up I saw 2 rooms up here. One was a bathroom, and the other a bedroom. The hallway was also narrow and instead of hiding in the rooms, I stood near the stairs so I could try to hear their conversation.
They opened the door for the stranger. There was more than just one person, and I could tell from the sounds of the boots clattering onto the wooden floor.
"Alright boys," one of the men said. "how did you do on your hunting duties?"
Nick replied,
"Sir, we shot two black birds in the trees, but when that happened Brian was attacked by a few walkers. Then we had to leave, but I did manage to get one of the birds into a bag."
The voice spoke again,
"Excellent. Now if you two could go out and retrieve that other bird, we could give you three rations instead of two for tonight's meal."
Brian spoke for the first time,
"We're on it Mr. Barnes, we..."
He interrupted Brian as he tried to speak.
"It's okay young men, you can refer to me as Clinton or Clint. That's what my folks use to call me."
That's who the new leader was. It was Clint... I could remember what happened two weeks ago.
Joan was about to hang my dad when Javi shot her and Clint escaped. So this is where he ended up.
I took a peek over to see a little bit of what was going on. I got a quick glimpse of Clint's face, but didn't get the chance to see the other guys who were with him.
Brian replied,
"Okay Clint, we'll have it back before the sunset."
"Excellent. David, you take the bird off their hands when they return with it, clear?"
Clint's voice echoed in my head. David... David... my dad was here. He was in Stafford. He was here with Clint.
"Roger that."
My dad finally spoke. I didn't know whether to feel happy or sad. Did I want my father to know I was in his town? I thought maybe I should just leave a note for him once we leave with Brian and Nick.
Once I heard the door close, I headed downstairs.
"Okay, now the three of us gotta head out. That means we can smuggle some stuff outside of these walls today. It'll only take about one or two trips." Brian replied.
"We can finish it up tomorrow for sure." Nick said as he began packing his duffel bag.
"I've got a backpack too. Actually I've got two backpacks." I said pointing at the corner with the two backpacks.
"Great. This should probably only take one trip then." Brian replied.
I walked over to the bag and picked it up when there were two more knocks on the door.
"Gabe head up again." Brian whispered.
I did the same thing again. When I got up I gave them a thumbs up, meaning they could open the door.
"Hey boys, I was wondering where you found this motorbike."
It was my dad.
Of course he would've known where the bike was from. He was from New Richmond.
"We found it on the road sir." Nick answered.
"On the road? This bike wasn't here before."
"Yes sir. We just took it back to see if it was still usable. We don't have the keys to it though." said Brian, trying to back up Nick.
"Okay, it doesn't matter anymore. It's yours. I'll see you two in about an hour or two with that bird."
Just like that, he left.
I came downstairs and emptied out my bag in one of the bedrooms. The only thing I kept was the pistol. Nick and Brian gave me items to stuff into my backpacks and soon they were full.
"I told you we could do it in one trip." Nick said as he opened the door.
I looked around. There was still a lot of stuff that needed to be carried out.
"What about the rest of this stuff?" I asked.
"That's gonna be carried out tomorrow. Then we ditch during our hunting duties."
Brian finally got downstairs with a filled backpack and duffel bag.
"Okay let's head out."
--------------------
10 minutes later
--------------------"Yo Gabe, empty out your bag here." Brian said pointing at this tree stump.
I did empty out my bag. They had a huge pile of survival items around this tree stump. It was pretty well hidden in the forest. Once we got everything emptied out, we went and found the other bird that Nick shot, and placed it in a plastic bag.
Finally we got back to the front gates and the gatekeeper didn't suspect anything. He opened the gates for us again and we slipped through.
We took the motorbike through the town and found our way back to their home.
"Listen here Gabe, we really appreciate your help. And maybe you and Clem can come with us after we leave." Brian said.
I didn't know what to say, or whether to accept or deny. I decided to reply.
"Sure. That sounds great."
About 10 minutes later I took out my notebook that I found in New Richmond, and began writing to my dad.
Hey dad, it's Gabe. And I wanted you to know...
