"It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single boy in possession of popularity must be in want of a girlfriend before high school finishes." I hear Beth's bubbly voice announce as I place my lunch tray next to Jane's on the table. I look at Nick and raise my eyebrow. He shrugs. "And it works both ways. All girls want a high school boyfriend." She looks at Nick coyly, who smiles and kisses her cheek sweetly.

Nick and Beth have been dating for so long now we're all used to their public displays of affection. They're a sweet pair but they bicker like an old couple which subsequently brought on the nicknames 'mother and father' we occasionally use for them. They often act like parents to us due to the years advantage they have on us.

They attend the sixth form part of our school, whilst Jane, Charlotte and I are attending our final year of high school. This means we often get uncalled for advice (or what some may call directions) from them both. Nick is the more sensible of the two, with Beth having a slight craziness that keeps our group awake.

"And you three, are in serious luck." Beth continues, nodding at Jane in particular. Charlotte tilts her head in curiosity at the statement. I glance at Jane, who's red lips are pulled into a sweet smile.

Jane is the prettiest of our group by far - of our school even. She has long golden blonde hair and huge bright blue eyes - a head turner. On top of her looks, she's the kindest girl you'd ever meet. I have no idea how - but she sees the good in everyone. You could slap the girl and she'd apologize for her face getting in the way of your hand.

Charlotte on the other hand, is the opposite of Jane in her physical nature. She has short, mouse brown hair and brown eyes. The three of us are best friends.

"We're all on our first day." Charlotte states, and I realize I had zoned out of the conversation.

"Yes, first day of the new school year, but it's their first day here altogether. They transferred from that other school north of ours. I don't think anyone knows why." Beth whispers, as though anyone outside of our table would be able to hear her over the continuous noise of the busy canteen.

"That's weird." Charlotte comments.

"Maybe they just fancied a change." Jane suggest, shrugging and sipping her peach tea through a straw.

"Sorry, I zoned out. Who are we talking about?" I ask.

"Charlie Bingley and William Darcy." Nick says, making Beth hit his arm gently.

"You said you didn't know them! I hadn't told you their names yet!" Beth screeches and I cringe, hoping no one can hear her.

"I said I don't know them well." A smug smirk covers Nick's mouth as he stares down at his girlfriend. "I've played rugby with them a few times. They used to be on their old school's team so we had a few matches."

"You are so annoying! Have you spoken to them? Are they going to Isaac's party tonight?" Stupidly, our first day of school is a Friday, allowing there to be a party tonight to start off the new year of school. It's hardly a time for celebration but our school is notorious for using anything as an excuse for a party.

"Yes." Nick answered. I watch Charlotte as her eyes settle on something behind me. Before I can ask her what she's looking at I feel a pair of hands grab onto my shoulders from behind.

"Lizzy! We got invited to Isaac's party! You'll have to take me now!" Lydia's shrill voice exclaims and I watch Nick's face fall.

"How did you get invited? You're not even in our year group!" I groan, shrugging out of her grip. Lydia is my younger sister. She's in the year below mine at school.
