Maya saw her every single day at exactly 3:40pm.
Sometimes it was hard for her because she dyed her hair almost every week but Maya knew those beautiful hazel eyes all too well.
It all started on a cold Summer's day last June, when the sun had hidden behind the clouds and it had started to rain a little and the ice cream shop was practically empty. Maya was standing behind the counter picking at a hangnail, thinking about the peanut butter and jelly sandwich she had for lunch.
She walked in and Maya gasped. Maybe a little too loudly but she gasped at the girl with messy blue hair and a small smile.
"Hi!" She said cheerfully.
Maya was too busy looking at her hips so she was caught off guard "Uh. Hello! What can I get you?"
The girl giggled "A ice cream. Vanilla, please"
Maya got the scoop and carefully scooped vanilla ice cream onto a wafer cone and then she handed it to the pretty girl "Here you go! $1.25 when you're ready. Please"
The girl handed her the money and took a seat at the table nearest the counter.
Maya went back to her hangnail but almost immediately she was back looking at the pretty girl and boy, did she look hot licking that cone.
Fast forward 13 months and here we are. 3:37pm and it was three minutes until Maya saw the love of her life again.
She still didn't know the girl's name. But she knew hers.
"Hi Maya!!" She was early today. She skipped into the shop "Vanilla, please"
Maya smiled "Well, you're happy today"
"I am!" The girl had soft blonde hair now "I've a boyfriend now! And he's made of gold!"
Maya's smile dropped a little as she scooped out the ice cream but she let the girl continue babbling away about the boy "with the British accent and the messy head".
The girl paid and went to leave but Maya finally blurted out the burning question.
"What's your name?"
The girl turned around beaming "Ashley! I thought you'd never ask!"
And for the next five months, Maya's heart broke a little more each day as Ashley spoke of her boyfriend, whose name turned out to be Matty and who turned out to be very funny, as she found out the day he came to meet "Ashley's friend from the ice cream store".
But then one day, Ashley came into the store sadly.
"Vanilla please" she said quietly.
"Okay, what's wrong?" Maya questioned, scooping the ice cream into the cone.
Ashley sighed deeply "He was drunk and he hit me and I ended it and I regret it and I miss him"
