I sat on the edge of the sidewalk, a cigarette in one hand and my lighter in the other. I was restless so I continuously flicked it on and off.
It was warm today and the sun shone right on my face. I wanted it to go away but at the same time, I hoped it'd stay and give me a reason to leave the house.
I smoked and I waited for someone interesting to walk by so I could say hello. I noticed the little things about people, the sparkles in their eyes, the way they walk, their freckles, the way they talk about their favourite things. Being beautiful was a bonus but in my eyes, everybody was.
But it wasn't until today I realised what the definition of beauty was when I saw you walk by.
You walked so confidently and lightly, like she was walking on air. Your hair billowed behind you, despite there being no breeze. Sunglasses covered your eyes but the minute I saw you, I knew you were the beautiful one I waited my life for.
I plucked up courage and waved at you. You gave me a huge smile and said hello to me, before walking on by.
My eyes followed you down the sidewalk. I wanted to follow you, but what would someone like you want to do with a girl like me?
Instead, I stayed put and just smoked, still flicking my lighter in the sunshine. I watched in the direction the beautiful person went and I waited, hoping to catch a glimpse of you again.
I waited for three hours and my mysterious, beautiful love reappeared, the shades thankfully gone. You eyes sparkled in the sunset's light and your face wore a frown.
I frowned at your stern face.
Extinguishing my cigarette, I plucked up the courage to talk to you.
"You alright?" I asked you as you walked by. You weren't so light on your feet now, you were stomping down the sidewalk.
You stopped at my question and looked at me. You gave me a strange look full of anger and then you looked as though you were going to burst into tears.
"No" you whispered "Not now"
"What's wrong?" I patted the sidewalk for you to sit down beside me. You were hesitant but you took a seat and looked at me.
"I..." you sighed "I don't know where I'm going wrong. I can't find love with someone who's sane. I keep falling for toxic people and cheaters and those who just want sex. All I want is someone to love me for me and my personality not my looks"
I gave you a hug "You'll find love someday. It takes time for coal to become a diamond. I guess the love of your life just hasn't come into your life yet. But they will, everyone has a soulmate, you just need to wait"
You sniffed "I guess you're right" you gave a sad smile "Thank you for listening"
"You're welcome"
You went to get up but decided against it "Hey um, could I stay here and talk? About anything? I just need a distraction"
"Of course! My name is Ashley" I told you.
"I'm y/n!"
You stayed with me for a while. You stayed chatting to me until the sun had set and the moon had risen.
The sky was littered with tiny, shiny stars, just like the ones in your eyes.
Suddenly, one flew past my eyes.
"Y/n! A shooting star! Make a wish"
You gasped "Ooh! Okay uhhhhh...yep made my wish"
You looked over at me "Make yours?"
"Don't need to, I've everything I need right here"
You smiled broadly at me "you're so lovely, thank you"
You leaned over and squeezed my hand but didn't let go. I smiled silently to myself and held on to you, inching slightly closer to you.
We stayed holding hands for a while until you yawned and I said I'd walk you home.
We walked down the sidewalk together, holding hands, in the moonlight on a Wednesday night. The night was clear and I wanted to dance with you under the stars. But we had just met, it just wasn't the time.
I left you at the stairs leading up to your apartment. Before leaving, you planted a small kiss on my lips.
You whispered in my ear.
"I hope I encounter you again"
