Camila encountered the love of her life when she was 11 years old.

She used to walk home from school by a route that took her through the park, through a small part of Chinatown and to her neighbourhood, where her house stood halfway down.

Except at the edge of Chinatown sat an abandoned house with boarded up windows and no door. It was where all the cool kids used to play.

On one particular day, she walked past it and she felt a hand on her shoulder. She turned to look into the mischievous eyes of Ashley Frangipane, who simply said "Tag, you're it"

Camila watched her run into the house and scatter. She was confused. Ashley was one of the popular kids. Why would she talk to Camila?
Anyway, Camila had to be home by six but pfft, she'd be fine, it was one game right?

She dropped her school back and ran into the house, chasing Ashley around the house with the creaking floorboards and the walls with the peeling paint and the old, dusty furniture.

She chased Ashley around the kitchen, the living room, the bedroom, the dining room, upstairs, downstairs, all around the house.

Suddenly, Camila fell.

She screamed a little, more in surprise than pain, causing Ashley to stop and turn but then both girls saw the nasty wound in Camila's leg, which had been caused by a piece of glass she had fallen onto.

Camila tried not to cry but she failed and big tears started rolling down her cheeks.

Ashley gasped a little and ran to her side, just staring at her leg.

"Come on Camz, we gotta get you cleaned up" she held out her hand to help Camila up who wailed as soon as her leg was moved.

"I'll carry you" said Ashley.

"Wait! My school bag!" said Camila.

Ashley scowled but went outside to put Camila's bag on her back. Then she returned to Camila.

"Right lets go" Ashley put her arms under Camila and with some difficulty, she got her into her arms. Camila wrapped her arms around Ashley's neck and tried not to make a fool of herself by crying even harder.

"It hurts" whimpered Camila.

"We'll get it cleaned up, I promise, where do you live?" Ashley asked softly.

"In that neighbourhood down there" Camila was afraid of letting go of Ashley so she nodded her head in the direction.

Ashley walked down the street, almost heroically, carrying the smaller girl with the dark hair, while her curly brown hair billowed in the wind behind her.

The street was mostly deserted at this time of day so there were no cars to stop and help them.

Ashley started to struggle pretty quickly, considering Camila was putting all her weight onto her, but she still carried on.

When she did get Camila home and bandaged up by her mom (who was the most grateful person on the entire earth), Ashley took full blame and apologised. Camila's mom said it was okay and asked her would she like to stay for dinner.

Ashley said okay and while Camila's mom put on food, Ashley went up to Camila, who was in her room resting.

"Hey Camz" she said quietly as she entered the room.

"Hi" Camila said weakly

"I'm really sorry" Ashley sat beside Camila so she could look at her "I didn't know that was going to happen"

"It's okay Ashley, I'm fine" Camila gave a small smile.

Ashley sighed and ran her fingers through Camila's hair, before playing with it, twisting it around her fingers and putting it into small little plaits.

Camila giggled a little, she liked people playing with her hair.

Once all of her hair was plaited, Ashley stood up and admired her handiwork "You look great Camz!"

Camila laughed with Ashley who sat beside her again.

"Camila? Ashley? Dinner's ready" Camila's mom called.

Ashley quickly placed a kiss on Camila's forehead before helping her out of bed.

"What was that for?" Camila asked.

Ashley shrugged "I've seen people do that in movies"

Camila blushed "It felt nice"

When Camila stood up and put weight on her foot, she winced and fell, grabbing onto Ashley, who wrapped her tiny arms around her, supporting her.

Camila regained her composure but she didn't untangle herself from Ashley.

They held each other for a moment.

"Hey Camz?"

"Yeah?"

"Isn't this what people do in movies ya know before they kiss?"

Camila looked at her "Girls aren't supposed to kiss each other"

"Says who?"

"I don't know but my mom said that it's bad"

Ashley leaned forward and quickly kissed Camila on the lips, just like the boys always do to her in school.

"Was that bad?" she asked

Camila was silent for a moment before she whispered "No"
