Chapter 3

(Still Erwin POV)

Riding through the city in a carriage with a bunch of criminals is not very common unless they were being taken to prison. But these four are being recruited into the survey corps today. And the commander is in the carriage with them to make sure that they don't do anything.

*A few months before*

"I am not convinced!" Commander Shardis yelled at the supreme commander Zackley "I believe you've gone through the papers concerning the new formation that I have submitted earlier. If we can put it into practice, we should be able to greatly cut down on losses."

"Commander Shardis... No, Keith. Of course i've read the report you turned in." The supreme commander said "The 'long distance scouting formation'. The one who thought this up was you, wasn't it Erwin?" He said turning to me

"Yes sir." I said

"I'm very impressed. Until now, expedition plans placed more importance on how to take down the titans the soldiers encounter. However with this plan you focus on how to reduce the chances of encountering them. The change in perspective is marvelous." Zackly said

"I am honored to be complemented in such a manner sir." I said feeling a bit flustered

"If we combine the old formation with the new one, in addition to cutting down losses, we might be able to expand the expedition reach."

"Supreme commander, if you understand all of this then why...?" Shardis asked

"I couldn't get the government's approval." He said "From the beginning there had always been many members who are against the expeditions. I've always been able to persuade them to continue the funding so far. But now even the public opinion seems against the expeditions beyond the walls. This time, Lobov Made quite a strong appeal to abolish the expeditions. He has a large influence on the nobles' house, and quite a number of supporters."

"But if we stop the expeditions now it basically means that we are surrendering to the titans! If we use this new formation surely we will..." Shardis continued

"Keith. Please understand. The abolishment of the expeditions, is it already decided? The final decision will be taken at the meeting 5 days from now. However there's probably no chance of overturning it anymore." Zackly said looking stern and strict.

"Yes sir. Understood." Shardis said

Back in the carriage I talked to Shardis about what went down at the meeting and talked to him about the possibility of a spy being put in the survey corps that Lobov sent. But soon we had arrived at the destination and I decided to take matters into my own hands. I will take the information straight to Lobov himself. And a few days later the day came when we were called back to the supreme commander.

"It passed." Zackly started "To think that Lobov would change his mind. I wasn't expecting that. Keith, do you happen to have any idea about the reason behind this?"

"No sir, not at all." He replied

"Alright then..." He said looking at me "In any case, the opinion calling for the end of the expeditions is still going strong. We've managed to get their approval this time, but I can't guarantee anything for the next one. In order to make even the smallest change about the current situation, you'll have to produce great results in this expedition."

"Yes sir!" Shardis said "We will do our best!"

"That's all..." Shardis said

"Supreme commander." I started "How did the request I made the other day go?" I asked

"Ah the one about your plans with the underground district isn't it? I've told the military police about it already."

"Thank you sir."

"However, no matter how good they are with the 3D maneuver gear, are criminals from the underground district going to be useful during the expedition?" He asked

"Supreme commander, I happened to see them in action a few days ago. I believe their skill is the sort that should not be taken lightly." I said "The woman who appears to be their leader as well as a male in their group seem to be on the level as survey corps veterans."

"Oh that seems promising"

"If there's anything with even the slightest chance of working, we plan to invest all of them in the coming expedition. First however. We'll plan out a way to get them before long."

*Present time* (Ava POV)

The breeze was strong and the sky was very cloudy that day. We had just gotten to the survey corps headquarters and were about to get initiated.

Before long, the soldier that had led us here told us that he needed to report our arrival and that we needed to stay where we were.

"Ava." Levi said "The survey corps... Does this mean?"

"Im NOT joining the corps. I only came here to get close to that blondie." I said very pissed off "That bastard, I'm going to kill him straight away whenever I get the chance."

"Hey." Isabel said signaling for me to calm down

"You remember my plan right? If you're still not sure, tell me." Farlan said

"Don't treat me like a child Farlan." I said "I've been thinking it over and I don't think it's going to work."

"Those guys won't come to contact us again. It's meaningless if we kill him now. This is our chance." Farlan said as if ordering around one of his leaders "It's definitely going to work. Trust me."

"Come on you three." The soldier said coming back.

"Ava!" Farlan yelled as I started walking away

"Damn it i'm serious. Someday we'll get out of that trash dump and live up here." I thought walking away

That night was all cloudy. You couldn't see the stars at all from where I was sitting outside. Farlan's words echoed in my mind over and over again "This is our chance... Trust me..." I started to feel bad about what I said and did. They mean the world to me, they're the only friends I have ever had and I pushed them away. Maybe he was right.

I suddenly heard a voice behind me "Wow it's beautiful" I heard Levi say "You're keeping all this to yourself? That's not cool."

"You sneaked off all on your own too..." Isabel said and then I saw Farlan behind them

"Are we too noisy that you can't do anything when we're around?" Levi asked jokingly

Isabel brought out some bottles.

"They say the stars go round and round in the sky is that true? It seems likely." Levi said

"I haven't seen a sky like this in my entire life." I said looking up just as the clouds started to part. "Farlan. I'm sorry."

"Huh?" He said confused

"I'm sorry for going off on you. I was just kinda nervous being in this place for the first time." I said still looking up to the sky "I'll trust you."

I could see a smile on his face

"Me too!! I'll trust you!!" Isabel said very loudly.

"Isabel please." Levi said "You're drunk."

The next day was a lot nicer. The weather was clear and all of the members were gathered in the courtyard. With the commander of the survey corps standing with us. Commander Shardis.

"ATTENTION!!!" He shouted
