A little girl rushed through the city. People passing by looking confused. A tiny hand was holding onto a piece of bread. Two men followed behind, yelling for her to stop. She didn't listen to them and just kept running. Passing down an alley, she came to a dead end. The yelling of the men getting closer. She looked around for something to climb but there was nothing. Just brick walls and rooftops.
"I found her!" One of the men yelled coming down the alley
"little bastard." The other said "you're not getting away this time." He reached out towards her before stopping midair and falling to the ground.
"what the-" the other said before he fell too.
Both men were dead. Their throats were slit.
The girl looked around for something that had helped her but found no one. Turning towards the front of the alley, a very tall man was standing in front of her. She recognized him right away from his mode of dress, which was significantly different from everyone else underground.
"There you are." Kenny said adjusting his hat. "Don't run off like that. You could have gotten in trouble. What have I said about stealing from shopkeepers?"
The little girl stayed quiet as he led her back to the house that she knew very well.
It was dusty inside, but that was normal. Papers were everywhere scattered all over the floor and the single table in the middle of the one room home. She was used to this. As far back as she could remember, Kenny was always taking care of her.
"Alright." Kenny said sitting down at the table. "We're going somewhere special today. But first we're going to take a break from what happened. You must be hungry." He said getting up to the only cupboard in the entire house.
It was also filled with dust. Spiderwebs littered the corners and the only thing in it was a small piece of bread that looked good.
"Here." He said tossing the girl the bread. "Eat. We're leaving soon."
As soon as the girl finished the bread, they headed out. The man in the overcoat stood out from the other people because of his suprising height. Most people, when they saw him, stood back as he intimidated them. Soon they came to a small building on the edge of the underground. As they went inside, the stench became even more unbearable. A man was sitting at the counter. A few chairs were around the room. Some of them had people in them, but most were empty. Kenny started talking to the man.
"Is Kuchel here?" Kenny asked looking sort of worried
"oh you mean Olympia. She caught something a while back. She's not for sale anymore." The man said showing his teeth which were hardly there, and the ones that were, were rotting away.
"Do you know if she's here?" Kenny asked the man
"yeah, she's in the last room to the right." The man said pointing down a musty hallway.
Kenny motioned for the girl to follow him as he walked down the hall. When they got to the room, he opened the door and went in. The girl followed close behind as she didn't want to get in trouble with anyone. Inside the room there was a bed with sheets and a woman sleeping. She looked bad, very skinny and malnutritious.
"Oi." Kenny said trying to wake her up "oi. You lost quite a bit of weight huh." Kenny said looking at the woman.
Suddenly, a voice came from the wall in front of the bed. A boy around the young girls age was sitting on a crate. He had messy black hair and looked like he hadn't eaten in days. "She's dead." The boy said looking up at Kenny.
Kenny turned towards him looking at him with curiosity. "You alive?" Kenny asked.
The boy didn't respond.
"Ah. Kushel must have-" he started not finishing his sentence. "What's your name boy?"
The boy responded in a rough manner. He didn't sound like he was in the right state to do anything. "Levi. Just Levi."
Kenny sat down across from him as the girl sat next to him. "Well. There's no point in giving you my name." He said taking his hat off "I'm Kenny. Just Kenny."
the boy just stared blankly at him. Not quite understanding the situation.
"Kuchel was a client of mine." Kenny said clearly lying about his past. "I came here to see if she was doing alright since I hadn't seen her in a while, but I guess I was a bit too late."
The boy just kept staring. As if that was the only thing he knew how to do.
"I can't just leave you here." Kenny said looking back up at Levi. "How would you like to come with us? Ava here has lived with me since she was little, but I can still teach you all of the things I taught her. So, what do you say?" He said holding his hand out
Levi just took his hand as Kenny pulled him up onto his feet.
"Come on." Kenny said pushing him out the door.
Suddenly, Kenny's memories came flooding back like a damn that had been broken
"No one must know of this child's existence." The woman said, bright red hair held tight against her face from sweat. "Protect her. The world must not know of her. I'm not going to survive for much longer. But the power she will inherit will be much stronger than that of others like her. Raise her somewhere where she will learn the truth about this world one day."
Kenny took the child from the woman's arms and ran. He didn't know where he was going, but it was somewhere.
Since that day, Kenny trained us both, both in combat and in reading and writing. He was a great mentor. When we were twelve years old he left us to fend for ourselves. Since then, we vowed to never leave each other and stay together forever until the end of our days.
