Chapter 13

"Commander! It's time!" A soldier from on top of the wall shouted "Titans in the vicinity are being kept away! 30 seconds until the gate opens!"

It was time for another expedition. It was also time for Eren's first expedition beyond the walls.

"ALL SOLDIERS ADVANCE!" Erwin shouted as the gate finished opening.

Soon, all soldiers were outside and everything was going smoothly.

"On the left!" Hanji shouted not long after the soldiers were outside "Ten meter class approaching!"

Several support soldiers hooked onto the buildings around to take it out. Eren watched the soldiers being able to give their lives for the cause of the survey corps.

"Pay attention!" I shouted at him trying to get his mind off of what was happening. "Focus on the mission! The defense squad will handle it!"

*A few weeks before*

"We're the special operations squad." Gunther said explaining the formation to Eren "Line 5, in the center, on stand-by."

"That's quite far in the back." Eren said

"Well, this is the safest spot in the entire formation. You get treatment even more special then carts, carrying supplies. This time, our expedition is short-distance. All because this one is a trial for the real thing meant to deliver you back to the Shiganshina district. This time our objective is nothing more than to go outside the wall and come back alive." Gunther said explaining that we wouldn't be going very far into the titan territory.

"Sir?" Eren said talking to Gunther "I wasn't told yet what to do with that power... Is it really ok to let things go without resorting to it?"

"Hmm." Gunther said thinking "Did you get the meaning behind the question the commander asked you?"

Eren thought for a moment "Hey, did you guys understand what the commander meant?" Eren asked the rest of us.

Everyone denied that they knew anything, but Levi and I kept quiet because we knew what he meant.

"Maybe, this time our sortie has an objective other than simply going to the outer lands and coming back alive." Gunther said to Eren "If so, then commander simply concluded there's no need for soldiers to know that. That being the case, we still have only one objective - to go outside the walls and come back alive. Trust the commander."

"Yes sir." Eren said still confused by our situation

"Well then, that's it for today's training." Gunther said dismissing everyone "Let's go back to the castle."

*Present*

"Oluo!" Eren yelled "Do you think my classmates can win against titans?"

"Huh?" Oluo said shocked "What the hell were you doing during the past month huh? Listen, what any expedition to the outer lands really rides on is how good we'll be at avoiding fighting titans altogether-" Oluo started only to bite his tongue before he could finish his thought

"DEPLOY THE LONG DISTANCE SCOUTING FORMATION!" Erwin shouted to all squads as they fanned out from each other.

*Ness POV*

Not even an hour after the expedition, titan's were already popping up. several had already been spotted on the outer right sides of the formation. And finally, one was found on our side. A deviant came out of the forest making its way toward a cadet named Armin Arlert.

"Damn it. I have no choice but to fight it." I said pulling out blades "Cis, go for the nape! I'll stop it from moving!" I said to my assistant soldier.

"Yes sir!" He shouted from the other side of the titan

"Plains are not the location where you can utilize the 3D maneuver gear to the fullest. My chance of success is extremely flimsy, and to top it off I might fall from the horse. Not to mention that I might get separated from the others. But I can't let him disrupt the formation. We have to finish him off the moment he's down!" I thought getting ready to attack "If I myself can't do what I taught to our new recruits, then who can? The one up ahead if I remember right, I don't want for our rookies to face titans like this just yet."

I latched onto the titans ankle and cut the back of it knocking it to the ground. Cis came from above and took it out with ease.

My horse came back to me almost right away so I was able to get away. But just as the first was taken down, another appeared over the horizon.

"Another one? Just what is the right flank lookouts doing?" I asked watching the titan running

"If that titan's coming here, ignoring them, then it seems that this one's a deviant as well." Cis said turning around as well

"It can't be helped." I said going in front of Cis on horseback "We'll do the same tactic."

"Yes sir." Cis said a bit worried

"Twice in a row. Talk about bad luck." I thought to myself "That one looked like a 14m class. That's some serious trouble-"

Just then the titan burst through Cis and I causing us to almost lose balance. It was fast

"It's going for Armin!" I thought watching it sprint towards him at full speed

"Don't let her through!" I yelled at Cis who was already off of his horse.

"Yes sir!" He said hooking onto the titan before getting caught in its grip and smashed to death.

I watched as he fell to the titan and went for its neck before my rope was pulled by the titan and flung into the air, I was whipped into the air before crashing into the ground.

A titan with intelligence could only mean one thing. Someone who could transform into a titan. And that was not good in our situation
