It was pitch black outside. Eleven, almost midnight. You had to stay late at work because of a project that needed to be finished by tomorrow, and you were honestly and thoroughly exhausted. The lampposts were your only source of light, and the only noises you heard was the car engines a few streets down, and the repeating thumping sounds your shoes made every time they hit the ground.
Clack.
Clack.
Clack.
Cla-
"Ow! Stop!" you heard a quiet yowl from inside an alley, and you stopped, your heart rate increasing dramatically, to replace the footsteps.
Thump.
Thump.
Thump.
You should be getting home... but the man inside there sounded like he really needed help. Slowly, you got out your keys and placed them between your fingers, acting as a makeshift weapon, and slowly, you headed in.
"P-please, stop!" a man cried weakly. Another man then started laughing, and calling the other man things you didn't understand. Silently, you peeked around the corner and saw the man, most likely the one pleading, on the ground, and standing on top of him, the person harassing him. He was wearing a light grey t-shirt and muddy jeans, and had tattoos. The man on the ground had a black hoodie and sweatpants, but that wasn't what surprised you. What did was that he had black cat ears and a tail. What the...?
"Uh... hi," you said, before the attacker could hurt the cat-man anymore. The tattooed man turned to you, glaring.
"What do you want?" he barked.
"Well, I, uh... I couldn't help but notice that you were sort of... uh, beating that guy into a finely squeezed pulp," you notified as the cat dude turned to you, scared.
"P-please help me," he whimpered.
"Shut up," he snapped, and looked back to you.
"That's not nice," you scolded, wagging a finger. "What's your name?"
He snorted. "Like I'd tell you. Look, I'll make a deal with you. Leave now, and maybe I won't kill you." He pulled out a switchblade, and waved it warningly at you. You smirked, and crossed your arms.
"Well, you know, I would like to take that offer, honestly, but... you know, I really don't like people who don't like other people... it's complicated, alright? But, seriously." You pulled out your keys, and took a step forward. "Step away from the cat-dude, and I'll rethink my decision to make you a third eye."
Hesitation flashed in the man's eyes, and you chuckled. "Come on, it's a pretty good offer."
"Just stop talking!" He looked furious as he jumped at you, brandishing his weapon. You dodged just in time, and jabbed your keys in the general direction of the attacker. The bravado, of course, was all for show. The keys hit nothing, but as the attacker turned to you, you kneed him in the balls. It always worked. He groaned in pain, and fell to his knees.
"Now, I'm in a good mood," you giggled, liking how this fight was going. "So, I'm gonna let you go. Okay? Now get out of my sight, before I change my mind and snap that pretty face of yours." He looked at you, all anger disappeared from his face to be replaced with fear. He nodded, and got up, sprinting out of the alleyway as fast as his legs could take him.
"T-thank you," he stammered, looking at you gratefully, and you got a good look at him. Black hair that matched the colour of fur on his ears, and looked slightly Asian.
"No problem. What's your name?" you asked, holding out a hand to help him up. He took it, and brushed off his pants.
"Uh... well, all my friends just call me Kittyplier, because... well, you can probably tell," he chuckled nervously, putting up his hood to hide his ears.
"Yeah, I can guess. What made the dude meet you in a dark alley?"
"He just... well, I'm used to it, with what I look like."
"That's not really cool," you muttered. "I need to head home now, and you should, too. G' night." You were about to walk away, but you didn't hear his footsteps behind you. You turned back around, and saw him looking around uncertainly. "What? Are you lost?"
"N-no. Uh... I don't...." His voice was too quiet for you to comprehend what he just said.
"I didn't get that, sorry. Mind repeating?"
"I don't... have a... home," he admitted, grabbing his tail bashfully. You felt bad all of a sudden.
"Oh. Well, how about you come crash with me?" you offered. His ears noticeably rose from under the hood, and his eyes gleamed in surprise.
"Really?" he whispered.
"Yeah. I've got a spare room, just promise not to steal my stuff and run in the middle of the night," you chuckled.
"With what I just saw you do, I wouldn't dream of doing anything to piss you off." That made you laugh.
"Alright. Come on, Kittyplier. We'll see what we can do for you. And get you something to eat as well. what do you like?"
"What do all cats like?" he scoffed with a lopsided grin. "Fish. Or something."
"I'll pick something up on the way home," you sighed. "And I'll go shopping properly in the morning." You motioned with your hand for him to follow you, and he did, into the dead of night.
