chapter 1

It was a day like any other at the police station. Phones were ringing, the chief's secretary was running around with folders in her hands and my team leader was screaming like always. I was sitting behind the messy desk that I shared with one of my coworkers, leaning back on my chair and looking past him. The other four were listening to him, but my eyes were fixated on the white board behind him and my eyes were narrowed in thought. 

The body that I discovered yesterday was our third murder in the past month and we were starting to think that we were dealing with a serial killer. The chief was pressing on us to do something and put whoever was responsible behind bars, but it was tough, because we didn't have any leads yet. I was sure that if we could figure out the connection between all of the victims, we could predict who the person will target next, but we had no idea what it could be.

All of the sudden the team leader said something that made my ears perk up.

'' The new team leader will be arriving shortly. ''

I snapped out of my thoughts, tilted my head to the side and blurted out: '' Were you fired from your position, Xiumin-sshi? ''

Xiumin pushed his glasses higher up his nose and glared at me. '' I'm really not in the mood to even interact with you today Hajin, so give me a favour and shut the fuck up. But if you must know, so you won't ask stupid questions when the team leader will finally arrive, it was orders from above. The main police station in Seoul sent him to help us on this case, because they think that our incompetent team won't be able to put the murderer behind bars. ''

'' Who is he? '' Hye-rin curiously asked. She was leaning on my table and looking at Xiumin with wide eyes. Her long blonde curls were tied in a neat bun, she was wearing a pink flowery blouse and looking as charming as ever. She was very well known for her beauty and at least half of the police officers from the station were in love with her.

Xiumin was about to say something, when his eyes stopped on somebody that was standing behind us. A shadow fell over his face and his features distorted in a frown, while the stranger that appeared out of nowhere spoke up: '' It's me. I am the new team leader. I was asked for help by the chief of the police station that I work under, because the team is supposedly incompetent. ''

The sound of his voice instantly sent chills down my spine and my eyes widened with shock. I didn't need to turn around to see who the person was, I already recognised him and was cursing the faith that brought us together again. My other coworker Sehun glanced in my direction with confusion when he saw me trying to hide behind his shoulders before saying: '' I would object,  but it has been three murders already and we are completely lost. ''

'' Sehun! '' Xiumin hissed and glared at him with annoyance. He liked to glare at Sehun and I a lot. I was pretty sure that if it would be up to him, we would be of his team in seconds.

Sehun shrugged and leaned back on his chair, forcing me to lean on mine too, so that I could hide behind his shoulders. '' The truth hurts, doesn't it? ''

Xiumin sighed and pointed at him. '' That is Oh Sehun. He is one of the field investigators. Don't be afraid to yell at him. He rarely does anything if you don't give him a little push and threaten him that he will lose his job otherwise. ''

Hye-rin smiled and offered her hand to the new team leader. He merely glanced at it, but didn't bother to shake it. She didn't seem to get offended by his actions and cheerfully introduced herself: '' I am Kim Hye-rin. I'm a forensic technician. I help collect evidence on the crime scenes and work in the lab most often. I hope we'll work together well. ''

Jongdae and Yixing, who were sitting at the other desk also raised their hands, waved and introduced themselves. The second one was in the middle of his greeting when I, leaning back on my chair and struggling to hide behind Sehun, suddenly found myself falling. I let out a surprised shriek that made half of the people in the same floor flinch and glance in my direction and crashed on the ground. I blinked with surprise, when a shadow suddenly fell over my face. I looked up and stared right in the familiar dark eyes that I remembered all too well.
