chapter 13

It was way past midnight and I was the only one at the police station. Xiumin sent us all home that night and I did try to go to sleep, but even after swallowing some of the pills that usually helped, I kept waking up every ten minutes. My head was too heavy because of this case, I was constantly thinking about it and seeing things that happened rewind over and over again, so eventually I gave up and decided to come back here. 

The light at my desk was the only one that was turned on and I was looking at the murder board with a thoughtful expression on my face. Kwan Taeshik killed a lot of people, but he didn't chose his targets at random. Everyone had some kind of connection to him. He killed his first adoptive parents and second too. He killed his coworkers. He killed his friends. It was almost as if he murdered everyone he ever formed some kind of connection with. Were those human emotions that triggered his killings? Then why didn't he kill Chanyeol?

I closed my eyes and tried to list everything that the two of them had in common. They grew up at the same orphanage, but it was years from each other and they both got adopted in to different families. Taeshik studied to become a doctor and his brains and charisma helped him rise to a high position at a very young age. At that time Chanyeol was still very young and despite possessing similar traits of a psychopath, lived a completely different life. Then somehow along the way, their paths crossed. 

My eyes snapped open at the sudden realisation.

Baekhyun is right, I really am an idiot. 

They might have grown up in the same orphanage, but there was still only one way they could have met. 

I pulled my phone out of my pocket and started typing a message to Baekhyun. I quickly wrote him how I was thought of something and that he should call me as soon as he'll wake up and grabbed my jacket. I barely managed to put it on before my phone already rang and my lips curved in to a small smile as I put it to my ear and answered: '' I should have known you aren't sleeping, Baekhyun Oppa. ''

'' I know I told you to call me that, but somehow it still makes me uncomfortable every time I hear it, '' he muttered in response and sighed. '' Why aren't you sleeping, Hajin-ah? It's two in the morning. You could not possibly have any smart thought at this time of day. ''

'' You were the first person I called, but if you don't want to listen to what I have to say then I'll gladly phone Sehun, '' I snapped back with annoyance. Sehun definitely wouldn't answer my call and would probably even end up blocking my number, but he didn't need to know that. 

'' I am... I am the first person that you think of? '' he asked with surprise.

I frowned with confusion and made my way towards the elevator. '' What are you trying to say? You know, you are the one that is not making any sense right now. ''

I pressed the button for the elevator and waited for it to come up. Baekhyun was silent on the other side of the phone for a few moments, then he said: '' Hajin-ah... Why am I not your type? ''

'' This is not what I called you. Honestly, if you want to start that conversation, it would probably take until morning for me to explain that, '' I muttered and impatiently tapped my foot on the ground. 

'' Would it make a difference if I would tell you that you are totally my type? '' he seriously asked out of the blue and nearly made me drop my phone.

'' What? '' I blurted out and my eyes slowly grew wide with shock. The elevator door opened and I quickly stepped forward. I politely nodded to the other police officer that was standing inside and pressed the button for the ground floor. The elevator door closed and I quietly mumbled in the phone: '' You know what? Why don't I call you back? Even better, why don't I not call you at all? You really have some nerve saying these kind of things over the phone at two in the morning. ''
