I was standing on the fire escape stairs and clutching my gun in my hands. My heart was racing in my chest, I was listening to the sounds of the night and wondering what was happening. The dark alleyway where I was standing was empty, quiet and the street lamps set up on each end of it didn't work, but there was a reason why I was here. Between two dumpsters was Chanyeol's motorcycle, the same one he used to run away when he first tried to kill the teacher who once worked at the Yellow house of hope orphanage. Somebody took the license plate off, but there was no doubt that it was his. I was told to stay here and wait in case him or Kwan Taeshik would try to escape from here, while Sehun was guarding another possible exit and Baekhyun, Xiumin and Jongdae went to barge in to the killer's apartment.
I sighed and frustratedly kicked an empty can that was on the ground. It hit a nearby trash can and made a loud noise, making me flinch and quickly look around to see if everyone heard it. The street was still as quiet as ever and I disappeared back in to the shadows. I didn't like being pushed on the sidelines like this, but there was nothing that I could do. Xiumin gave his orders and I had to follow them. This wasn't the time to act on my own and cause trouble. Our team was already under a lot of pressure from the police station chief and the public that was urging us to get to the bottom of this investigation and make an arrest.
I crossed my arms on my chest, leaned back against the wall behind me and my mind wandered to the conversation that Baekhyun and I had with my psychiatrist yesterday.
Mister Hwang told us that our suspicions were correct. Taeshik and Chanyeol met in the waiting room of his office. They instantly bonded over how similar they were to each other and became friends. Chanyeol was happy because he found another friend besides Baekhyun, while Taeshik saw himself in him. Mister Hwang had his own theory about what happened afterwards. He thought Taeshik realised Chanyeol's life wasn't really as bad as his. They were both abandoned when they were young, but he had a family and a friend now. He got angry because Chanyeol had a chance to grow up like a normal person, while he spent his childhood lonely and kicked around from one abusive household to another. His sick and twisted mind decided to ruin that, just like the universe ruined it for him.
He took the child away, brainwashed him and turned him in to his successor.
His theory made a lot of sense, there was only one thing about it that was bothering me. For it to work, there would have to be another person involved. There would have to be a third party that looked after Chanyeol while Taeshik was in prison.
Could it be?
I tilted my head back, looked at the dark sky above me and thought of our murder board back at the police station. My breath sped up when I slowly began to put the pieces of the puzzle together. I always found it strange that there was a lot of differences between the murders, even if they were supposedly committed by the same person, but now it made sense. There were two types of killings and two different weapons because they were committed by two different people.
Who? Who was the person that was working with Kwan Taeshik?
I jumped with surprise at the sudden sound of breaking glass, snapped out of my thoughts and turned my head. My eyes slightly widened at the sight of the figure that just threw himself through one of the windows of the first floor of the building. He was covering his face with his hands to shield himself from the glass before he landed on top of one of the large trash cans. His body rolled on the ground and he spent a few moments gasping for air and struggling to get up.
I was too surprised by his appearance, then he managed to pick himself on his feet and I quickly raised my gun. '' Chanyeol, stop! ''
The tall guy glanced over his shoulder at the sound of my determined scream, but he wasn't stopping. His dark and soulless eyes only faintly grazed the gun in my hands and he continued running like it was nothing. He was directed right towards his motorcycle and I didn't know what to do. If it was any other case or any other criminal, I would have no problem shooting them, but this time it was different, because even now when I was watching him running away from the law the only thing that I could think of was him years ago when we were both kids and he was my only friend.
