chapter 15

I stepped out of Baekhyun's Lamborghini and instantly found myself surrounded by TV reporters. I blinked with surprise at all of their flashing cameras and warily eyed the microphones that were being pushed in my face. They were all speaking over each other and trying to get me to say anything and I didn't know what to do or how to react. 

Everyone on TV was talking about Kwan Taeshik ever since the day he escaped from prison, but it was becoming worse and worse with each day that passed. Sehun warned me to be careful when Baekhyun and I will come back to the police station tonight because the public find out about the death of the former orphanage teacher that was supposed to be under police protection, but I had no idea how bad it really was. All he said was that all of the cameras were starting to make him wonder if he should quit his job and become a movie star instead and now I understood exactly what he meant, but different from him, I didn't like it at all. 

We worked on some big cases in the past and captured a few dangerous serial killers, but it was never reported on TV. I wasn't used to this kind of attention, so I only shielded my face with my hand and slowly tried to move forward. I didn't come far and reporters quickly started pushing me around and yelling over each other even louder.

'' What are you doing to capture Kwan Taeshik? ''

'' What do you have to say about the police's incompetence that everyone has been talking about lately? ''

'' The streets of Seoul aren't safe anymore, people are scared and the police isn't doing anything about it! ''

'' How do you feel knowing somebody died under the police's care? ''

The last question made me stop and slowly turn my head. The reporter who asked that, tapped his camera man to make sure he was filming my response. I looked directly at the camera and my hands started trembling. '' Horrible. I feel absolutely horrible. ''

My eyes grew wide in panic when the reporters started screaming questions and accusations over each other again. My heart was beginning to race and I was starting to feel extremely uneasy in the middle of the crowd, but then somebody came to my rescue. Baekhyun appeared out of nowhere, swung his arm over my shoulder and guided me between the TV reporters. His face was deathly serious and I instantly managed to compose myself again. '' Next time just ignore them, okay? ''

'' Thank you, '' I mumbled and looked at the ground. It was the third time he saved me today and I still remembered how he instantly stepped in front of me back at the shooting range when the owner pointed his gun at me. 

'' You have my sunglasses and this would be a good chance to put them to good use. Next time just wear them and walk right through the reporters. That way they won't be able to even catch any of your emotions on camera, '' Baekhyun lectured me and shook his head with disapproval. We walked inside the police station and he let go of me again. '' You almost showed weakness in front of the camera back then. That is not a good thing to do. People want to think of cops as invincible. In situations like this one, when a murderous killer is on the loose, you have to appear as strong as possible. No matter how scared you really are inside, it's important for them to trust you and think you have everything under control. Otherwise they get scared and start wondering - what if I am next? ''

'' Since when are you so wise? '' I mumbled and eyed him from the side.

We stepped in the elevator, he pushed the button for our floor and our eyes met. '' Since always, but you have been looking at my handsome face and muscular arms instead of listening to what I have to say, rookie. ''

I snorted and grinned with amusement. '' I think it's funny how that sounds exactly like something I would say. ''

Baekhyun's proud expression disappeared and got replaced by worry. He cringed and answered: '' Perhaps we do spend a bit too much like each other. We need to take a break after this case is over because otherwise we'll start showing up at work accidentally wearing the same outfits and finishing each other's sentences and I don't want us to be that couple. ''
