chapter 18

Huge and colourful commercial signs were covering the buildings and the shop owners were just opening their shops and starting the day. They were setting up fruit and vegetable stands, carrying out the clothes they were selling and lighting up the Christmas decorations they turned off for the night. Some who people who lived nearby were cleaning snow for their cars so that they could drive to work, others were taking their dogs out for a walk and they were all shooting strange, still half asleep glances at me. I was standing in front of a closed dumpling restaurant and drooling over plastic models of their dishes that they had set up outside until Baekhyun grabbed the back of my jacket and dragged me down the street. 

'' Get your priorities straight, rookie. Work first, food second, '' Baekhyun seriously muttered and shook his head with disapproval. To oblivious bystanders we probably looked like a parent who was denying their child dessert until they would eat all of their vegetables. '' If you shut up and stop being annoying for a second, I'll buy you the dumplings myself later once we are done with our investigation. ''

'' No take backs! '' I said and my frown turned in to an excited smile. I ripped myself from his grip and jogged down the street. Halfway to the end of it, I turned around, looked at him and started walking backwards. '' Will you stop getting distracted and hurry up, Baekhyun Oppa? We are here to work after all. Tch, so childish. ''

He raised an eyebrow in amusement. '' Are you really trying to play the same card that I always play on you with me? It does not work like that. I am the sassy one here and you are the comedic relief. ''

I opened my mouth to protest and say that I was just as good and serious of an investigator as he was, but I was cut off by a sudden pain. I was walking backwards, so I wasn't really looking where I was going and I walked right in to a street lamp. I groaned in pain and grabbed the back of my head, while Baekhyun bit his lower lip to hold back his laughter. My features distorted in to a frown, I turned around and started walking normally next to him again. My voice was deathly serious when I said: '' This didn't happen. You didn't get it on camera anyways, so no one is going to believe you if you try to tell to Sehun or the others. ''

'' I don't even have to try with you. I get enough material to make fun of you just by spending time with you, '' he replied, smirked and patted the hurt spot on the back of my head.

I stuck my tongue at him before picking up the pace and speed walking ahead of him. The police station that we were directed to was just a short walk from where Baekhyun parked his Lamborghini. It was the size of one of the six floors of ours and it looked a lot alike. Perhaps the furniture and other equipment was a lot older, but they also had a large room with numerous desks set around where the officers sat and worked, boards where they could pin up information about the cases they were working at and other things like that. There were two cells at the end of it where they kept criminals before someone from a bigger police station took them away and the office of their chief was separate. 

There were only two cops there when Baekhyun and I showed up. They were both still half asleep, drinking their morning coffee and talking about how they hate their six in the morning shifts until they saw us. That was when one elbowed the other and glared at him: '' I should punch you for saying that the morning shit is boring and nothing ever happens! Now you've jinxed it! ''

The other cop sourly smiled and grinned at us. '' What he meant to say is 'good morning'. What brings you to the police station at this hour? Is there anything we can help you with? Do you have a crime to report? ''

'' We are actually two crime scene investigators from one of the main police stations of Seoul, '' Baekhyun answered and crossed his arms on his chest. '' Technically, your higher-ups. ''
