(Ashley POV)
The fire crackles in the living room as AJ as I try to warm up. The girls were happily swinging in their baby rockers and Jonathan comes up from behind and hands us mugs of hot chocolate.
"I feel like my hands are going to fall off!" AJ whines and takes a large gulp. I roll my eyes and look back to see Jonathan taking a picture of the girls.
He looks up and sees me watching.
"Mama keeps yelling at me because I she only has three granddaughters and I took two of them hostage." He says and I laugh.
"I miss my crazy uncles, aunts, and cousins. Plus Grandma's Spanish food is the best,"
AJ sighs and takes a pillow from the couch, leaning back and laying on the floor. I take a sip of my hot cocoa but I was still shivering to the point where my teeth were chattering.
I rub my hands close to the fire and feel a blanket being draped across my shoulders, and Jonathan plops down in between AJ and me.
"If you go shirtless cause you still think it's hot, I'm leaving,"
AJ warns and Jonathan punches his shoulder.
"When did you become such a smartass to your old man?" Jonathan asks and AJ shrugs.
We all stare out into the toasty fireplace for a few minutes.
You could hear the crackling of the fire and the constant noise mixing in with the bustling city below us.
"This seems like a great time for a story. AJ do you have one?"
I ask and AJ takes in a deep breath.
"Once upon a time,"
He starts dramatically,
"there lived a boy. The end." He huffs and Jonathan cracks up.
"That's all you got?" I laugh and he shrugs.
"I've only been alive for ten years. Do you think I had time to collect bedtime stories?" He uses his youth as an excuse.
"I've got one," Jonathan announces and we quiet down.
"Once upon a time, there was a man and his grandson."
I pull the blanket tight to my body as he continues.
"The man was the god of fate and had come to earth to cast his blessing.
His grandson, however, never knew this and the two had become distant because the grandfather was never home." he says.
"The God of fate had grown old and died before he ever got to form a true bond with his grandson.
Regretting this, he used the very last of his godly powers to perform a ritual."
He pauses and takes in a breath. AJ looked somewhat entertained for once and I was surprised.
Jonathan continues.
"A ritual that would cast a blessing on his grandson's future offspring.
Now the god of fate also had a lover
but because of his job he was never able to be with him either
so he used the very last teeny tiny bit of his powers to twist fate so each of his grandson's children would meet their soulmates at least once in their life."
He says and AJ closes his eyes.
"Did they? Did they all meet their soulmates?" AJ yawns and smacks his lips a little while falling asleep.
Jonathan gently combs his fingers through AJ's hair.
"I believe if I remember the story correctly, that they all did." He finishes and AJ yawns.
"That was a really sappy story dad. I was hoping for more drama."
AJ sighs and snuggles up to the pillow until he falls asleep.
Jonathan turns to me, with those light gray eyes reflecting the warmth of the fire. I gently rest my head on my curled up knees and continue looking into his eyes. I feel my heart thump against my chest.
"You've always been such a sap, what the fuck is wrong with you?" I chuckle a little and he rolls his eyes.
"Some of us like sappy romance stories to tell their kids one day."
He says and looks into the fire, Poking it gently.
He pushes closer to me and I feel my cheeks get hot, but I was starting to realize it wasn't from the cold or the fire.
It was from him.
