22. Can't Handle The Pain

"What do you mean, "there are some complications?"" Emma asked as her eyebrows furrowed in confusion. Emma, Killian, David, and Alexandra were all sitting at a table inside of Granny's Diner. Emma was sitting on Killian's lap whilst his arms were wrapped around her front. He gripped onto her a little tighter because he could tell that she felt uneasy, and he wanted her to know that he was there . . . no matter what.

"David and Mary Margaret cannot take custody of you right now," Alexandra said in a calmed tone. She could already tell that Emma was upset, and she didn't want to add to it.

"Well why not?" Emma asked, raising her voice a little bit.

"We are at the final step of the adoption process. So we need David's signature . . . but we also need Mary Margaret's," Alexandra said slowly, hoping that Emma would understand.

Emma slowly widened her mouth as she realized what Alexandra was saying. Mary Margaret can't sign the papers, because she is in a coma. She is in the coma, because of James. Emma flinched at the sudden thought of the man who abused her for so long.

"So . . . what are we supposed to do?" Emma asked. She snuggled herself into Killian's side a bit more, needing comfort from the events that have taken place within the past 24 hours.

"We just have to wait it out," she responded.

"Well while we wait it out, why don't we talk about the fact that Mary Margaret's "accident" was not an accident," Emma said angrily. Killian swallowed the lump that formed in his throat. He was surprised that she mentioned that to them. What if they didn't believe her? What if they think she is just trying to hurt James like he hurt her?

"What!?" David said, raising his voice. He would kill him. As soon as he got out of jail. No one touches his wife.

"I went to visit James today and-"

"Wait, what?! You saw James?!" David asked holding his hand up to stop Emma from speaking.

"Yeah, he wanted to see me."

"I don't care if he wants to see you Emma. He is a dangerous man. Why the hell would you do that?" David spoke angrily as his face started to grow more and more red. "Killian, why would you let her she him? You should understand more than anyone."

"He threatened me," Emma spoke quickly. "He said he would hurt Katherine and I if I didn't go talk to him."

"So now you're talking to Katherine too? Do you remember at all what these people did to you? They're monsters!" David replied as his eyes darkened and his anger managed to increase even more. Emma flinched a little bit at this side of David, and Killian tightened his grip on her to comfort her.

"I forgave her. She came to Killian's house a couple of nights ago, and I told her that if she wanted to be in my life again she had to divorce James. So she went to see James and she gave him the divorce papers, but he said he wouldn't sign unless he saw me one last time. So yes, I forgave her. You of all people should understand that David," Emma said referring to his past of alcohol abuse that he told her about. When Mary Margaret saw through it and saw his real self. Just like Emma did with Katherine.

"Emma . . ." David replied in a whisper. "I just want you to be safe. Mary Margaret is already in a coma, and you're all that I have left. I don't want anything to happen to you," his voice broke as a tear slipped from his glossed over eyes. Emma hopped off of Killian's lap and went to the opposite side of the table to give David a hug.

"It's okay. I'm okay," Emma whispered into his ear. "Look, we're going to go to the police and we're going to tell them what James said. We will get the people working at the prison to look back at the camera footage so we have proof, and we will start an investigation. We will find out who did this to Mary Margaret and we will make them pay for what they did, okay?" Emma reasoned with him. It was the perfect distraction while they waited for Mary Margaret to wake up from the coma.
