Chapter Twenty - Making It Last

Chloe's POV

I only had one place in mind as soon as I closed the front door to Wes's house. I started sprinting down the short ways to Drew and Hailey's house. Drew was spending the day with some of his friends and I knew Maria and Lynn were also over at Hailey's.

I raised my fist to knock on the door but before I could it opened. Maria stood standing in the doorway.

"Before you say anything just please understand that he's changed," she said sternly.

"I don't know what to understand or believe or think right now!" I exclaimed.

"Just come in, we can explain," she said ushering me in. I walked in front of ER into the living room and sat I between Hailey and Lynn.

"Hailey knows the story the best," Maria said.

"I do?"

"Yeah, you've known them the longest."

"True," Hailey said.

"I didn't really come for an explanation, I came for tissues, ice cream and movies," I said half sarcastically.

"Yeah well you need an explanation," Maria said.

"How do you even know what's going on?" I asked confused.

"Before Austin went over he called me. He kind of never ended the call so we all heard everything," she said awkwardly and sadly at the same time.

"He punched him."

"I know."

"Twice."

"I know."

"I thought he was nice," Lynn said almost seriously. We all laughed light heartedly.

"I thought both of them were nice," I added quietly.

"Chloe, just let me explain," Maria pleaded.

"Alright, I'm listening," I said giving in.

"So, I know you want me to say something all heroic and all but in all honesty, Austin was right," Hailey said sadly. I looked down and started twiddling my fingers. "Just a minute, let me finish. The key word there was 'was', Wes stopped all that shit when his music career started hitting off. If you just give him another chance, I promise he's changed."

"I don't know, I-"

"Would it help if I said that you guys look pretty much perfect next to each other?" Maria added. I looked down shyly and felt my cheeks heat up.

"Because you do, and you should really not listen to your brother right now and forgive him," Hailey said.

"I'm not ready to just forgive my brother like that, he hurt Wes really badly- oh my god, I need to go see Wes," I said quickly.

"We'll give you a ride," Maria said grabbing her keys. We all stood up and followed her out the door and into her car. She started driving back down the street to Wes's house and when we got there I saw Austin's car just pulling out of the driveway. She sped into the driveway and skidded to a stop. Austin stopped his car and started to get out while I did.

"Where do you think you're going?" He asked threateningly.

"To see Wes," I said simply, quickening my pace.

"No you're not," he said trying to grab my arm. I bolted for the door as I saw Wes's face flash from the upstairs window and then disappear. I swung the door open and locked it before Austin could open it. He started pounding his fist on it and I backed up away from the door.
