Ruby’s Point of View
“Pearl!” I scream at my older sister, who had just given a slip to my other sister, Emerald, for someone’s order. “You’re late, Ruby.” Pearl says to me, giving me a stern look. “Yeah, I know. And I’m so sorry. But you wouldn’t believe what happened last night.” I say as I grab a black apron from the back, and walking back up to Pearl. I was wearing my normal work uniform, a pair of jeans and a black t-shirt with my black apron. My hair was pulled back like Pearls and Emeralds, but mine was much frizzier. I was about to tell Pearl about how I met Mark, and the whole Emma situation, but I heard an all too familiar voice call my name.
“Ruby?” The deep voice calls me, and I whip around, coming face to face with Mark and those adorable brown eyes. “Mark?! What are you doing here?” I question him, slightly confused. He chuckles as Pearl hands him a cup of coffee and what seems to be a brownie. “I was just getting something to eat. Would you like to join me?” He asks, and I look at Pearl who gives me a wink. I nod at Mark, and he shows me back to his table.
“So, what’s up?” I ask Mark as he takes a sip of his coffee. His eyes widen, and a moan escapes his throat as he sips the warm beverage. “Holy shit, this is amazing!” He exclaims, making me laugh. “Thanks. This business has been in my family ever since my grandfather first opened it.” I say, and Mark looks genuinely intrigued. “Oh wow, that’s really cool.” He says, locking eyes with me. I blush and look away, but Mark gently takes my chin and makes me look at him. We both lean in slowly, but something in my brain tells me this isn’t right, and I back away. I quickly try and change the subject.
“So…” I start. “How did you find this place?” I ask, and even though he looks at me, his eyes full of disappointment, but he still answers my question. “Emma told me about it last night on our date. Well, technically I asked…” Mark blushed, looking slightly embarrassed. “Oh honey, don’t be embarrassed. I mean, I know what you do for a living.” I quickly cover my mouth as I say this. Well shit, now I blew it.
“What do you mean?” He asked, looking back up at me. “I mean, uhh, Emma told me last night! Yeah, that’s right, Emma told me…” I say quickly, trying to cover up my mistake. God that could have been bad. Mark gives me a look like he doesn’t believe me, but he quickly shakes it off. He sees that I look uncomfortable, and tries to change the subject.
“So, you never did tell me about that tattoo last night.” He says, and I look down at my wrist. Should I tell him? I mean, if he knows about it, I’m sure it won’t be a big deal. “Oh, well it’s actually…” I start, but before I could finish, Emma burst through the door.
When she sees Mark and I, she runs over to us, smiling like an idiot. Once she sees that I’m sitting with Mark, she practically pushes me out of my chair, taking my place in sitting across from his, whilst I moan in pain and rub my soar ass.
“Oh, Ruby dear, be lamb and get me my usual.” Emma tells me as I pick myself up off of the floor. Mark gives me an empathetic look, and I just smile back. “Sure.” I get up and walk away, going to make Emma her iced coffee.
As I come back, I see Emma and Mark having a conversation, well, more like Emma boring the hell out of Mark. Mark seemed to be drifting off into his own little world, and once he sees that I’ve come back, a smile lights up on his face. I hand Emma her coffee, and as she takes a sip, she quickly spits it out all over me.
“Oh Ruby! This is terrible! Please, go get me a new one.” She says, handing me back her cup. “Emma!” Mark scolds, standing up and coming to my side. My older brother, Jasper, walks over to me, and he just gives me a sad smile. “Go home, Ruby. Clean yourself up and just relax. You’ve had a stressful day already.” He smiles, and I thank him. “I’ll drive you.” Mark offers, and Emma gives us both a dirty look. “Oh no you won’t. You are going to stay here with me.” Emma demands at Mark.
“You know what? No. I refuse to be here with a girl who is so rude to her friend.” Mark states, standing up for me. “I know! Now, go leave Ruby alone, and come and sit with me!” Emma demands one more time. God, I knew Emma was an airhead and a bitch at times, but what the hell is going on with her?
“I’m done with you Emma. Now come on Ruby, let’s get you cleaned up.” He says, grabbing my hand and leading me out the door. Before we left, I hear Emma wail, begging for Mark to come back. He just gives her a stern look, and walks me out the door.
“Here, I have a spare shirt and some shorts in my car.” He says, walking to the trunk of his car, which seems to be just a red car. I’m horrible with types of cars, so I couldn’t be able to tell you the name of it to save me life.
Mark smiles as he hands me a black shirt and a black pair of basketball shorts. “I’m gonna go back in real quick and change.” I smile at him, and he returns the smile. God, he is so adorable! “Ok, I’ll wait for you in the car.” He says as I walk back into the café as Mark enters his probably warm car.
I avoid eye contact as I make my way to the bathroom in the back. Once in I lock the door and quickly change. I change first into the pants, which I assume to be his, since they were pretty big on me, but I liked them. They’re comfortable. Then I put on the shirt after cleaning up some of the coffee I had gotten on myself. Once I put the shirt on, I realize it’s one of Marks shirts. Awe! That’s adorable!
The shirt was HUGE on me, so I took out my ponytail and tied the shirt back, making it not only more comfortable, but also more fashionable. Not that I really cared about fashion. I mean, sure, I love to look nice, but I’m more of a shirt and tee shirt kinda girl.
I avoid eye contact as I make my way out of the café, just like when I had entered. Holding my coffee covered clothes in hand, I make my way back to Mark’s car. I quickly hop into the shotgun, and set my clothes in the back seat.
“Thanks for the clothes.” I smile. Mark just seems to be staring at me, and I snap my fingers in front of his face. “Hello? Earth to Mark. You still there?” I giggle as he comes back, a deep blush appears on his face.
“S-Sorry.” He stutters, trying to regain himself. “You just… Wow…” Was all he could say, which of course made me blush like an idiot. I turn my head so I’m looking out the window, and I hear Mark start up the car.
We drive for a while, and I know he’s not taking me to my house, that’s for sure. After driving for about ten minutes, we pull up to an apartment complex. He turns off the car, and looks over at me. I look back at him, but give him a confused look. He smiles as he answers my silent question.
“I thought I should take you to my apartment. You know, so I can wash your clothes and stuff.” He says, and I smile. “Awe Mark, you didn’t have to do that! You coulda just dropped me off at my house and I could have done them there. You seriously didn’t have to do this.” I say, feeling guilty.
“I know. But I wanted to.” He says, and I smile as we step out of the car and into his apartment.
