Emma’s Point of View
‘Oh my God… What the hell happened back there?’ I think to myself as I walk back to the store next to the café. I honestly have no idea what came over me. I didn’t mean to be so rude. I just don’t want this to happen again.
Let me explain. So the last boyfriend I had, well, I fell madly in love with him. We dated for a few years, and I honestly thought we were going to start a life together. But then, one day, he comes over to my house and says it’s over. No explanation whatsoever. But then, after I was heartbroken, he had the nerve to ask Ruby out.
Of course, Ruby being the amazing friend she is, said no and kicked him right in the nuts. He never came back after that. But, I just don’t want that to happen again. I actually have feelings for Mark. I have to make this right.
I tell my manager that I don’t feel well, and she lets me go home for the day. I walk over to my car, unlock it and start it up, determined to make things right.
I drive to the house, but when I open the door, I see that no one’s there. I decide to just wait it out, since Mark’s going to have to drive her back here. I can just apologize to both of them when they’re here.
Since I was probably going to have to wait it out, I decide to change. I walk upstairs to the bathroom right next to Ruby’s room, and I see that her laptop is still up and running. I decide to go over and charge it so when she comes back she can use it if she wishes.
When I go to shut it, my finger brushes over the mouse pad, and a YouTube video comes up. When I see who’s on the screen, I gasp and slam the thing shut, shock filling my body.
“Holy shit… Ruby knew who Mark was before we even met….” I say to myself, as I put the laptop on the charger and shut the room to her door.
I walk back downstairs and into my room to change into something more comfortable. I put on a black V-neck tee shirt and a pair of purple sweatpants. I pull my ash blonde hair up into a high ponytail and walk into the living room. “Watching some TV should help me get my mind off of everything.” I tell myself as I turn on some ‘Fear Factor’ and try to relax.
A few hours had passed, and it’s now 5, and the two of them still aren’t back. I got up to make some popcorn, and as I put the bag into the microwave, I hear the door open.
Mark and Ruby’s laughter fill the house, but once they see me, they both just try to ignore my presence.
“Look, Mark, Ruby, can we please talk about this. I just want to apologize.” I say, and they glance at each other and nod.
We walk back into the living room, which is a nice spacious room painted white with orange dots littering them. The sofa and the two chairs in front of a large TV were also the same orange as the paint on the walls. The soft carpet under my feet were also white, and the whole room just tied together. The person who had lived here before Ruby and I was an artist, so every room was a different color with different patterns.
Mark and Ruby sit on the sofa whilst I sit on one of the chairs. We all face each other in an awkward silence until I decided to break it.
“Look, I know you’re both probably really pissed at me, but I want to apologize. First, to you Mark.” I say, and Mark sits up, waiting for me to continue.
“Ok, so in my pasts relationships, if that’s what you can even call us, haven’t gone so great. My last boyfriend actually broke up with me just to ask Ruby out. So, when I saw you and Ruby talking, I got a déjà vu feeling, and I didn’t want that to happen again. I didn’t want to get my heart broken again, Mark. I really like you. And I’m sorry.” I say, and Mark looks down at him hands.
“And Ruby.” I start. “I know I’ve been a total bitch to you lately, but like I said to Mark, I don’t want the same thing to happen to me again. You have been so sweet to me whether I was being a bitch to you, and I’ve been taking you for granted lately. I mean, without you, I wouldn’t have known what to do on that first date with Mark. And I know you two are just friends, and I’ve been overreacting lately, and I’m sorry. I’m truly sorry, and I completely understand if you don’t forgive me. I wouldn’t forgive me either.” I say, now looking down at the floor.
“Oh Emma! Of course I forgive you! I mean sure, you’re being paranoid, but I understand why you would be. But I assure you, Mark and I are just friends.” Ruby smiles, and we both get up and hug.
“And I forgive you too. Now that I know why you were acting that way, I guess I can’t blame you.” Mark states, and I run over to hug him.
“Oh guys, I am so sorry. I swear this will never happen again!” I say, and the two just smile at me. Then Mark speaks up again.
“Well, I’m gonna go on my way. I’ll see you two soon.” He says as he hugs me and waves goodbye to Ruby. Then he walks out the door.
“Thank you.” Ruby says to me after Mark leaves. I look at her slightly confused, and I shift so I’m sitting crisscross on the chair I was currently sitting on. I give her a confused look and scrunch up my eyebrows.
“For what? I should be the one thanking you. I mean I was a total bitch a few hours ago.” I state, and Ruby breathes a laugh.
“That’s why I’m thanking you. Because even though you can be a bitch, you always manage to apologize, and mean it.” Ruby says, and I get up and hug her.
“Oh Rue! Of course I mean it! I would never want our friendship to be ruined.” I say, and we face each other. Then Ruby speaks up after a few minutes of silence.
“Well, I’m gonna go to my room. I might not be out for a while.” She laughs as she heads up the stairs.
“Oh, ok. Well, I put your laptop on the charger a few hours ago, so it should be fully charged.” I state, and Ruby stops dead in her tracks. She then runs back down the stairs and grabs my shoulders.
“Em, please. Please tell me you didn’t see what was on my laptop.” Well shit…
“No! Of course not! What, are you watching porn up there?” I question, trying to make a big joke. I rub my thumb on my index finger, something I do when I lie, but luckily Ruby doesn’t see that, and she sighs in relief.
“Oh, ok. And no! I do not watch porn.” She jokes back as relief washes over her face. She begins to head back up the stairs, but not before I say one last thing to her.
“You know what they say… ‘The internet is for porn!’” I say and we both burst out laughing. Ruby’s door shuts and I just sit there and think for a minute.
I just didn’t have the heart… I didn’t have the heart to tell her I knew.
