Emma’s Point of View

“I know! I can’t believe it!  He proposed!” I said excitedly into the phone. I was calling my mom to tell her the good news, and she was very excited to hear that I was finally getting married.

“That’s wonderful honey. I’m glad you found a nice young man who’s going to take care of you.” My mom said back. I lay back into a pillow on my bed and happily sigh, thinking about the future we’re going to have. “So, I’m assuming Ruby is going to be the maid of honor?” My mom asked, and all of my happiness soon turned to sadness and slight rage.

“Ruby and I have been fighting for a while mom.” I say, and I already knew my mom would be disappointed. I usually managed to end a lot of friendships due to my stubbornness and inability to say I’m wrong.

“Now Emma, honey, what happened? You two have been friends for years. What happened all of a sudden?” My mom asked curiously.

“Mark happened mom…” I said, and I heard my mom sigh.

“Now, you really didn’t want to lose Ruby now did you?” My mom asks, and I shake my head no, forgetting my mom can’t see me.

“No…” I sigh, knowing she’s right. I missed Ruby a lot. I missed us talking about everything and anything. I missed us going out and doing crazy stuff together. I’ve known Ruby almost my whole life, and I kind of feel lost without her. My mom’s right. I need her back. “Mom, I have to go and apologize to Ruby. I’ll call you later. Love you.” I could practically see my mom smile.

“Love you too honey. Good luck.” I hung up the phone, slid some shoes on, and called out to Mark that I was going out.

“Bye Mark! I’ll be back soon!” I say, and Mark calls back with a quick goodbye. He’s probably making videos or something. Marks channel has grown quite a bit since I had first met him, and that makes me really happy. Mark loves his channel more than anything, and it makes me happy to know he’s happy.

I drive where Ruby is staying, which is Pearls apartment. I knock on the door, and Pearl opens the door, giving me a confused look. “Do you, uh, have the wrong address?” She asks, and I give a sad smile.

“No, I’m actually here to talk to Ruby, if you don’t mind.” I say, shifting my weight onto my right leg, then left, then back to right. Pearl steps away from the door and lets me in. “I’ll go get her.” She says, walking away to go get Ruby. I just stand by the front door, waiting.

Ruby comes out after about a minute of waiting, and I hate to say it, but she looks kind of terrible. And that’s saying something, since I’m just wearing a pair of ripped up jeans and a black tee. But Ruby, she’s wearing a pair of short pj shorts and a large tee shirt. Her hair is a mess, and she has dark circles under her bloodshot eyes. “What do you want?” She says quietly. I walk over and hug her.

“Ruby, I am so sorry I ever let a guy get between us. It was wrong of me to ditch you and leave you to fend for yourself, and I feel terrible because I am terrible and…” Ruby finally hugs me back and giggles.

“I forgive you. Really. I missed you a lot. I still hate that you fucking kicked me out because Mark has a dick and I don’t, but whatever.” She smiles. Now that’s my Ruby.

“Ruby, you’re the best. And also speaking of Mark, I was kinda hoping you’d be my maid of honor…” I say, and Ruby thinks for a minute, wondering what to do.

“I mean, as flattering as that is, I don’t think I should be the maid of honor Emma.”

“But I mean, I don’t have any sisters, and I don’t know who else to ask. You practically are my sister Ruby.” I say, and she gives me a sad smile.

“I’m sorry, but I just can’t. You know how much I procrastinate and I’m terrible with time management. I’d love to go, but I just cant be the maid of honor. I hope you can understand.” She says. Of course I could understand. I most likely shouldn’t have asked in the first place, but it was just a spur of the moment thing.

“Yeah, I understand. But hey, do you wanna do something later? Like catch a movie or something?” I ask, hoping we can rebond after months without talking.

“Yeah sure. That sounds nice. I’ll text you in a bit. And thank you Emma. For apologizing. I know I was in the wrong for this as well, but it means a lot to me that you came back.” She says, hugging me once again.

“Of course. Everyone fights. I just couldn’t afford to lose such a good friend like you.” I say.

“That means a lot.” Ruby says, letting me go. I wave my goodbyes and head back out the door. That ended much better than expected.
