(Richie's POV)

The phone rang. Could it be?

I picked it up as fast as I could. "Hello?"

"Richie, it's me. Go to Eddie's. I'm really worried."

"Wait, why? What did he say?" I asked.

"Just go. Now. Hurry!"

The other line went silent and I put the phone down. Was he in trouble? I had to find out, and immediately. If he was, no moment could be wasted.

Before I knew it, I was in a full sprint. I sprinted past my parents on the couch. They had no chance to ask where I was going, and I had no chance to explain either. I ran out the door and left it wide open and quickly down the stairs to the sidewalk. Adrenaline flowed through my veins and even though I had no energy in reality, I was zooming past houses faster than I'd ever gone before. I saw the house and sprinted up, no time to take a breath. I felt like I was going to pass out, but I ran on.

I opened the door and noticed the front room was empty to Eddie's house. His uncle must still be at work, I thought. I saw that his door was open from the hallway and ran across the carpet. I slid and almost rammed into the old grandfather clock at the end of the hall because I was running so fast. I stepped into the door hastily and saw Eddie, lying on the ground.

I dropped to his level and shook his body.

"Eddie!" I screamed. Pills were scattered across the floor. I could only assume the worst.

I kept shaking him, violently, and yelling his name.

"Eddie! Eddie! NO! Eddie!"

His uncle walked into the house.

"Richie, stop yelling," he shouted from the other room.

"Call an ambulance!" I yelled in hysteria. I held Eddie's motionless body in my hands and broke down in tears.

He couldn't be dead. He just couldn't.
