Homecoming.
(Eddie's POV)
"How the fuck do you put this piece of shit on!" Richie grunted, fumbling with his fingers trying to pin the corsage on my suit. I simply laughed. I loved this boy and his foul mouth.
My uncle came forward and grabbed the red rose from Richie. Richie stepped back and watched as uncle Jack slowly and steadily slipped the needle through the fabric and closed the pin. He stepped back and him and Richie both looked at it with pride. Who knew it could be so difficult to put on a stupid corsage? What even was the point behind a corsage? It's just decoration.
"See. I did it," Richie gloated. I laughed.
"Tell that to the fifteen new holes I have in my skin, Richie," I pulled the edge of my collar down to reveal the skin he had repeatedly poked at.
He winced and turned red. "Sorry Eds."
"Where are you guys going to dinner again?" my uncle asked.
"We're going to an Italian restaurant, I forgot the name. Biogornio's, Biagio's, Biano's, something like that." Richie explained. Richie was beyond excited. I knew how much he loved pasta. His face lit up with the suggestion when we were all talking about it. Stan and Lucy were picking us up and taking us there.
From outside, we heard a honk. They were here. I got goosebumps on my arms. I was nervous. A high school dance terrified me, every aspect of it. I was just hoping that with Richie by my side, I would be able to get through it.
"That's them," Richie said. He looked in the mirror hung in my hallway and adjusted his tie. He sighed deeply and turned to me.
"How do I look," he asked, with messy hair and his new glasses. I smiled. He looked amazing.
"Perfect," I responded, pushing the one stray curl back against his hairline and kissed his cheek.
'I love you', he mouthed. I mouthed it back.
We walked out the door and my uncle waved goodbye. Before us was Stan's parents' new Mercedes. Richie opened the back door for me and let me go in before him. I crawled into the opening and was greeted immediately by Stan and his girlfriend holding hands. She was in a pretty blue dress and Stan's tie was blue to match. Richie and I both had red ties and red roses. We agreed on it because Richie's favorite color was red.
I sat in the far back row of seats and Richie climbed over the barrier behind me and sat in the spot next to me. We looked at each other. He could tell I was nervous, I think. It was gonna be like a double date, I guess, and I didn't know just how comfortable with that I was. Richie knew that the thing I was most worried about was the dance itself, and the party after. We had been invited to someone's party who was on the soccer team with Richie, who was a junior. We were just freshman. I was really nervous. I had never been to a party that didn't have cake and presents before.
He held my hand to calm my nerves and Stan's dad started the car back up. We started driving, had meaningless casual conversations with everyone, and then we pulled up in front of the Italian restaurant, Biaggi's.
"Oh, that's what it's called," Richie said. I let out a small laugh and he nudged me. We all stood outside facing the entrance as Mr. Uris drove off. He would pick us all back up in about an hour, giving us just enough time to eat dinner before the dance. We walked inside. Stan waltzed to the usher and cleared his through.
"Reservation for Uris?" he said.
The usher looked at the list in front of him and scanned the names. "Ah, yes. Let me go get a server to seat you."
