Richie was holding my hand and walking me back towards my house. We were about a block away when I stopped. I had almost forgotten about my mother.
"I can't go through the front room. My mom's sleeping in there."
"I'll sneak you up through the window," Richie offered.
I looked at my cast. "I-I don't know..."
"I'll catch you if you start to fall. You don't have to worry about that," Richie assured me.
I nodded and we walked for a few more minutes. I saw my house. We both snuck out towards the back and I looked up at my window. It was pretty far up. Maybe ten feet. I looked at Richie and frowned.
"You can do it," he whispered. Since our heights combined only came to around 9 feet, me being so small, we had to figure out how to get me up. I couldn't support my weight on my arms and pull myself up. He found a chair in my neighbors backyard and carried it over. He set it under the window and stood on top.
"Are you crazy? Sneaking out and now stealing? My mom is really going to kill me," I said.
He rolled his eyes. "It's not stealing! I'm just borrowing it. Once you're up there, I'll put it back."
I sighed and he helped me up onto the chair and we were face to face. He leaned down to get to my eye level.
"You've got this, Eddie," he said. He picked me up suddenly and started to lift me up onto his shoulders. I felt uneasy and off balance immediately. I finally managed to climb Richie's body enough to stand on his shoulders.
My legs were wobbly and he held on to my feet to keep them in place. I looked down at the ground. I was starting to get very scared.
Richie strained his voice and pushed me even farther up, supporting my entire weight with his arms. "Go," he said, getting out of breath.
I quickly pushed the window open and held onto the wall inside and pulled myself in with one arm. I fell on the ground in my room and lay there for a moment.
"You good?" Richie whisper-yelled up to me.
I looked out the window and nodded. He stared to pick up the chair and head over to my neighbors' backyard.
"Wait, Richie."
He stopped in his tracks and looked up. "Yeah?"
I didn't know what to say. "Thank you," is all that came out of my mouth. He smiled.
"Anytime, Eds."
He put the chair back and I watched him start to leave. "I'll see you tomorrow," he said. I smiled.
"I'll see you tomorrow, Richie."
I watched as he walked out of my yard and back towards his place. I began to lay back into bed when my door opened with a slam.
"Edward Kapsbrack!" My mother shouted. I froze.
She ran into the room and held me by the ear. "You snuck out of my house! And to go see that boy! I'm telling you, those friends of yours are nothing but trouble!"
"Mom-" I started to try to defend myself but she wouldn't give me the chance.
"I don't want you hanging out with them anymore. Especially Richie Tozier."
She stormed out of the room and tears fell down my cheeks. What was I going to do now?
