(Eddie's POV)

"Are you going to homecoming?" Mike asked me as I stared off into the distance in homeroom. I clicked my tongue and thought about it.

Did I actually want to go to homecoming? It was only two weeks into high school. The dance was still a month away. Why did I have to worry about it so soon?

"Um, I don't know. Maybe," I responded. I didn't know it was this big of a deal.

"You should ask Richie quick. Lots of people ask super early. You don't want to leave him waiting."

I nodded and shot Mike a fake smile. "Are you going?" I asked.

He smiled. "Yeah. I'm gonna ask this girl I like- El....Jane. Jane Hopper."

I nodded. The name sounded familiar, I didn't know why.

"You're just gonna go up to her and ask? Just like that?"

He giggled. "Yeah, but get this! I'm making cookies with my mom and I'm gonna give her a batch right before I ask. Then she'll definitely say yes."

"Hmm. Maybe I should bake cookies for Richie," I suggested.

"Nah," he declined.

"You don't have to win him over. From the looks of it, you already have him following you around like a puppy."

I smiled. That made me feel a lot better. I was stressed, because I didn't have time to date Richie, do well in school, and make it to all his soccer games. It was hard to schedule, and exhausting. At least I knew that no matter how hard I tried, he wouldn't care about the effort. He just cared that I cared. That I loved him.

"Well when should I ask him?" I pondered.

I glanced at the clock. Lunch was in fifteen minutes.

"At his game! Oh my gosh it would be so cute."

I smiled to myself. Richie had a game tonight. He even asked me to wear his jersey. That's what all the players' girlfriends did. I was part of the group because of it. Lucy had been sitting next to me. I had to admit it was nice to have someone with me at the games. I didn't get to see Richie until the end of the game.

"Okay. I'll do it."

I grew excited. Then there was a sharp buzz from the loudspeaker. Everyone looked up at the machine.

"Ahem. Excuse me, Derry High. I have an announcement to make," a voice said. A voice I knew all too familiar. Oh no. It couldn't be...

"Eddie Kaspbrak! Will you go to homecoming with me?" Richie's voice said.

Everyone in homeroom stared at me. It felt like the whole world was judging me. I wanted to cry and smile at the same time. That motherfucker beat me to it.

Mike put a hand on my shoulder. "Well, are you gonna answer him or not? Go."

I looked at my homeroom teacher, who was sleeping. I guess it was now or never. I fled the room and didn't look back. I didn't hear the teasing and whispering as I ran to the office.

I caught a glimpse of the black curly haired boy and stopped running. He was being pulled into the principal's office. I shook my head. He spotted me.

"What do ya say, Eds?"

"You're an idiot. But yes."
