Keith reached for the handle with caution. From inside was silence. He was worried for what he'd fine. The place to have been raided? Them to all be dead on the ground? He shook his head, trying to rid himself of the negative. He grasped the handle and turned the knob.
He opened the door to see only Lance pacing inside. Lance looked up and saw him, his face twisting into anger. "Where have you been? You said you'll be back an hour ago. You have everyone worried. They all went ahead while I stayed behind to wait for you!" he called.
Keith sighed and slumped against the doorframe. "I miscalculated. Sorry. It took way longer then I anticipated," he said as he walked in, placing his knife on the counter. "The other's left? To do what?"
"Investigate. We've already stayed here for four days. Lotor should be close to finding this place soon. We have a matter of a few days according to Allura and Katie," Lance explained, leaning against the table with his arms crossed.
Keith nodded and looked around the small abandoned shop. They had slept in pairs due to the small room. Lance and him were paired up. Katie was stuck with Allura and Shiro was with Hunk. They all pitied Shiro because they all can hear Hunk's snores, but he's the one who sleeps right beside him.
"Well I guess we're waiting together... or are we going to search too?" Keith questioned, sitting on the display across from Lance.
"We're waiting."
Katie looked at the building. It was yet another shop with dust mites and left-over products. She and Shiro had seen many like it: all looking as if they were left in a rush. She thought back to what Bon told her. Villages being taken on the outskirts of Altea.
They currently were in one. A ghost town full of deserted houses. They had decided to check the store for any useful possessions that could come in handy. The door creaked open and a small bell went off.
"This one is more bare then anywhere we've seen so far," Katie said as she ran her finger along on of the wooden display tables. A small coat of dust came off on her finger. "Looks like this was abandoned not too long ago." Shiro hummed and fumbled with something behind the counter.
Katie ignored him and continued to look around. A glint caught her eye. She walked over to a corner where a circular stand was. On the table was a single pair of round glasses. Katie silently stared at it. Her brother popped into mind. At a young age, the two were placed in an institution that her father worked for.
He always tried to make them go easy on the two, but never did he prevail. Over and over again, he made sure to ask the warden to be kinder to them, but the warden never listened. Then, when Katie should've been in middle school, if she was normal, her father and brother disappeared. She was sure it was the institution, but she never found anything about their whereabouts or what happened.
She picked the glasses up, noticing a small crack in the corner of the left lens, just as a tear fell from her eye. Where her tear hit the ground, a small vine grew upward and twisted. She placed them on her nose and turned to continue looking around.
"Hey Pidge!" The image of her brother smiling at her appeared. He'd always been kind to her and kept her away from where they experimented on children that showed up positive - like he was. At that time, she hadn't developed her ability yet and was only there because Matt had one.
Shrio pulled an blade up that was as long as his upper arm. He glanced at Katie to see what she was doing and froze. His face drained of color as he stared at her. "You look like...," he started, but stopped. His face was covered in realization. "Katie Holt. How did I not connect it?"
Katie looked at him with confusion. "Shiro, understandable english, please," she said, putting down a strange box she assumed to be an old camera. Shiro walked around the counter, dropping the blade he held. He stopped right in front of her and grabbed her arms.
"You are Matt's younger sister!" he called, eyes wide in surprise. Katie froze in his grip. She wanted to cry, scream, and squeal at the same time, but did none. Instead she was like a block in his hands, an expression of shock on her face.
"You knew my brother?" she finally managed, trying to keep her happiness low. She'd understand how one could easily let it slip by them that her and Matt were siblings. He had a darker shade of brown, tall, and his glasses made him look entirely different.
Without the glasses someone would barely be able to tell it was him if they weren't real close with him and barely saw him or examined his face. Meanwhile Katie had a near perfect eye vision and didn't need glasses. Her hair and shortness made her seem different then Matt. If their hair weren't similar shades or their eyes weren't the same color, no one would even guess they were in any way related.
"Yes. For a while he and your father helped me and Allura plan against Lotor," Shiro breathed as he let go of her arm. "I can't believe this. They told stories of you like a million times! I will admit, I'm quite a fan of you." Katie just watched him go back to pick up the sword.
"I wonder if Allura figured it out already and is waiting for me to too," he said with a chuckle. "I honestly feel like an idiot. I can't believe I didn't recognize you're name at least. They barely actually called you Katie, but I think they said it at least once. Matt always called you Pidge and your father addressed you as 'my little girl.'" Katie laughed at the nicknames.
"Well, that sounds like them," she said, finally able to talk like normal. "You really did know my brother and father." She couldn't help it as a smile creeped onto her face. "Tell me more."
