Katie fell onto the bed, finally noticing the difference between her world's bed and this ones. Instead of foam and spring in mattresses, she could feel hay carefully packed inside. Her mind flooded with thoughts. "Why did he have to be listening in," she mumbled, pouting at the thought. She stared at the roof, eyes dancing along the curves.
A knock came from the door. Katie raised her head, expecting it to be Shiro with an apology for eavesdropping, but instead she found Keith out of breath at her door. "Katie... I have to... warn you," he said between breaths. Katie flew out of bed and went to his side.
"Are you okay? Did you run here from the castle!?" she asked as she wrapped his arm around her head. She lead him to the bed. After he caught his breath, he looked at her with sharp eyes.
"Be careful in the town. No transitions there. Go there and act normal," he said, fear deep within his eyes. Katie gulped. Why should she?
"What happened at the castle!?" she breathed, nerves building up inside her core. He looked at his hands where he held a dagger that was glowing red, similar to the one Katie found inside the drawer. She quickly checked her boot, making sure Keith didn't catch her movement. She felt the blade safely secured. Where had he gotten that?
"They know your up to something," he said, leaning his head back against the wall behind him. "I was tasked with investigating. I have to find you guilty or innocent with evidence."
Katie gulped. "Meaning I can't just disappear or your position in the castle would be in danger. Also meaning that my life is on the line," she whispered like she had been out of breath. She stood and offered a hand to Keith. "Come on, let's take you to Lance." She winked and Keith blushed.
"Is it that obvious?" he asked and took her hand. Katie tapped a finger from her other hand on her chin. She pulled him off the bed.
"No, I just know you too well," she said and let go of his hand. "Now go get em' tiger!" Keith chuckled and exited the room. Katie resumed to thinking, this time of the dagger she held secret.
Katie locked the door by placing the rocking chair under the knob. She then turned to whip the picture out. If this was the old lady's room, did that mean the dagger was hers?
She looked at their hands and there the dagger was, safely in the girl's hand. It was neither the grandma's nor the parents, but the child's. Now she knew that, but why was this blade important?
She pulled the dagger out and looked it over, making it shine green once more. The designs matched the one Keith held, the size was about the same too. A symbol rested on the hilt that she hadn't noticed before. A strange 'V' shapeCould the people in this picture be related to Keith?
Now that she looked at the family in the photo, she saw traits that would link them to Allura. All white hair, though their skin were purple. Their eyes matched Allura's and the symbols under their eyes is what really gave the relative vibe. Their ears were pointy too.
She heard a crash downstairs and shoved the picture back into the drawer and removed the rocking chair. She slipped the blade into her boot and hurried downstairs. She froze at the scene she found. The couch was knocked over and Matt was on the floor with a red hand mark on his cheek.
"What happened to you?" she asked, staring down at her brother. He pointed to where Allura sat on the opposite chair with red cheeks. She was fuming. "What did you do?"
"I'll tell you! He had the audacity to-" Allura turned red and placed a hand over her mouth before turning away. "kiss me..." Katie turned to her brother with a raised brow.
"Yeah, that is a bold move. What in the world made you kiss her? You're more daring that Lance; he's only hit on her," Katie asked, her tone low and uncaring. Matt shot up.
"Lance did what?" he asked, rage in his eyes. Katie sighed.
"Allura, I suggest you two talk this out. Obviously you were giving my idiotic brother the wrong signs," Katie said and made her way back up stairs.
"I would say the same for you and Shiro," Matt called as she stepped on the first step. She looked at him and he held her gaze. "You should take your own advice and talk this out with him." Katie saw what this was really about.
"Maybe, but maybe not. He'll have to come to me," she said and made her way up the steps. She heard Allura's voice call up to her.
"He won't! He's too shy to approach you if things are awkward," she hollered. Katie stopped climbing the stairs and looked down. She did have a question. She returned to the living room in a hurry.
"Where is he?" she asked. Allura pointed to the front door.
"He said he was going outside to catch his breath," she said with a smile, the anger she had before was gone. Katie said a small thanks before rushing the door. She threw it open and stepped outside.
"Good luck!" Matt called, slipping an arm around Allura. She swatted him away as he smiled goofily. Katie ignored them and walked further into the light. She still couldn't believe Keith made it back before the day ended. What kind of stamina did he have stored up?
She spotted Shiro sitting on the porch, looking out over the street. Katie joined him, making sure to leave space between them. Shiro glanced at her and she smiled.
"You really are shy like Allura said. I have a question," she said and reached for her boot. He prepared to stand.
"If it is about earlier then I'm afraid I don't have the answer," he said, looking down at the ground. Katie pulled the weapon out of her boot and turned to him.
"Relax, I am smart. I will figure that out on my own. I wanted to know if you have seem something like this before!" she said. The blade lit green, shining in their face. His eyes widened.
"Where'd you find that? I haven't seen one of Alfor's blades since he was overthrown," Shiro mumbled, running a hand over the blade. The blade turned purple for one second.
