What? Did I hear something wrong?
“What?” I ask and Wilmer looks into my eyes for the first time. There are tears in his eyes. Oh no.
“Elisabeth’s not my daughter.” He says and stands up. “Fuck” He curses as I shake my head in disbelief. This can’t be true… Wilmer puts his hands on my shoulder and looks deep into my eyes. “We ruined our happiness for nothing, Demi.” He says and walks away from me.
What? I can’t understand. Elisabeth’s mom did a test. The results showed that Wilmer is a father. How it could change? I rush after Wilmer. He doesn’t stop; he continues walking.
“Baby.” I finally put my hand on his shoulder and stop him. “It’s okay.” I wrap my hands around him tightly as he squeezes me into his embrace. Oh boy, this things really ruined our life. We could be happy married together, have our own babies. We could avoid all this pain. No. “Maybe they are wrong.”
“They can’t be wrong. Fuck that bitch. I’m happy she’s dead because I would kill her by myself.” He shouts and I pull him into a hug again. Oh my God, this can’t be happening. “Demi, that kid ruined our life, do you understand? You left me because of her and now she’s not my daughter.”
“No, stop talking like this.” I pull away, staring deep into his eyes. “Are you crazy? You’re not her biologic father but it doesn’t chances anything. Your little miracle was worth everything what we did because she loves you, you love her. Wilmer, don’t freak out.”
“What? Don’t freak out?” He laughs sarcastically. “I lost so many years with you, Demi. Oh God, I can’t think.” He shakes his head and sits on the bench in the yard. The tears fills his eyes again as he stares into the sky.
“Calm down.” I whisper, trying not to cry. “I know it’s hard for you but try. You need rest. You can go home, take a shower, sleep and come back here tomorrow. You need to think about everything. I will be with Elisabeth, don’t worry. Tomorrow everything won’t look that bad.” I kiss his lips but he doesn’t answer. He’s probably in shock.
“Dem…” He turns to me and puts his palms on my cheeks. “Baby, we could have a beautiful live together and that bitch ruined it. I can’t believe. I should do another test to make sure. Fuck, I am so stupid.” He stands up and starts walking back and forth.
“No, stop” I grab his hand and make him look at me. “You have to calm down, okay? Everything is okay, Wilmer. Yes, she lied to you but you love Elisabeth. She’s your daughter and no one is going to change it. Stop worrying. You need time to think. Go home, I will spend the night with Elisabeth. You will come here tomorrow or whenever you are ready.” I stand up and lean closer. “It’s going to be okay, baby.”
“Yes…” He whispers and pecks my lips. “You’re right. I need to think. I’m going now, thanks Demi.” He kisses me one last time and disappears, leaving me alone. I sit on the bench as the tears fill my eyes. God, we could be happy. We could be together. But everything was ruined.
Elisabeth’s not his daughter. God, I thought they were similar. That little girl doesn’t have anyone in her life anymore, she has just Wilmer and he has to understand. He has to fight every bad thought and come back like nothing has happened. Her little world is too destroyed.
I wipe the tears away from my cheeks and come back to the hospital. It’s quiet, because it’s evening already. I still have no idea what to tell Elisabeth. Think, Demi, think.
I enter the room and find Elisabeth laying in the bed, her little hands wrapped around unicorn. As soon as she sees me, she sits up and looks at me with wide eyes.
“Where’s daddy?” She asks. I take deep breaths trying to think something. What can I say? I need to lie. Fuck, where are all good thoughts when I need them the most? “Demi?”
“Your daddy was very tired, so he went home. He should come back tomorrow, don’t worry.” I fake a smile and sit beside her on the bed. Elisabeth nods her head and hugs the unicorn again.
“Will you stay with me all night?” She asks again and I nod my head.

Elisabeth is not Wilmer’s daughter. How? I left Wilmer because of that, I ran away and it was worthless because she’s not his. How could he believe that bitch? I look at my phone but there is still no news about Wilmer. He promised he will write me when he gets home, but he didn’t. Maybe something bad happened? No, everything is okay, stop overthinking.
Suddenly my phone buzzes and I immediately look at it. Finally a message from Wilmer.
“Hey. Sorry, I wasn’t in the mood of talking. Thank you for everything, Dem. Good night.”
I feel tears in my eyes again. God, he doesn’t even want to talk with me. That new should destroy his world. And I can do nothing to make it all better. If he would know about the baby I lost… His life would be over. Maybe he doesn’t need to know that… Maybe…
No, I can’t be pregnant.
“Congratulations, Miss Lovato.” The doctor smiles but I shake my head again. No, this is not happening. NO. I left Wilmer, I can’t be pregnant. Not now. Not after everything I said to him. Fuck fuck fuck. I look at the doctor again and she has a stupid smile on her face. She thinks I’m happy. Fuck happiness. It’s the worst news ever.
I stand up and leave the doors office without saying anything. I’m pregnant. There is a baby in my belly and it’s going to ruin my life. The tears start running down my cheeks and suddenly the cold metal hits me. Am I dead?
“Dem”
“Demi?”
I open my eyes and look around. Elisabeth is sitting on her bed and looking at me confused. What’s happening?
“You were screaming.” Eli says.
“I had a nightmare.” I reply and stand up. I slowly walk to her bed and sit on the edge of her bed.
“What was your nightmare about? Daddy always asks me about my dreams and it always makes me feel better.” She lays down again and wraps her hands around the unicorn.
“Well, it’s just a silly nightmare, you know. Look, I will sleep with you, okay?” I ask and she nods her head smiling. I lift the covers and lay under them, wrapping my arms Elisabeth. God, my baby would be the same age.
“I love you, Demi.”
“I love you too, Elisabeth.”
