They sparred for what seemed like hours. "Thanks, Te-osh. This has helped with my nerves," Katie said, smiling at the alien. Te-osh nodded just as a voice boomed over the ship.
"The planet is under attack, I repeat: the planet is under attack. All personal report to the entrance and prepare to jump to work instantly," the captain informed. Katie raced out of the room, behind Te-osh, who had jumped to action as soon as the first phrase was said.
She put something in Katie's hands. "Smoke bombs. You may need them to escape," she said.
In the ship everything was panicky and electric with all the movement. Katie and Te-osh shuffled through to get to there designated areas in time. They lost each other in the sea of people. Katie scanned above the crowd and saw the hatch she was supposed to be at.
She pushed her way to the area and waited. The ship hit the ground in a crash causing bodies to be tossed around like toys. She heard grunts, curses, and yelling. They filed out of the craft as fast as possible. She finally got a good view of the outside attack after everyone had cleared. She was standing in the damaged shuttle's entrance, watching the event unfold before her eyes.
Two large galra ships hung in the sky like dangling ornaments, carefully placed. Descending from the two were smaller drones, coming to attack the inhabitants. Katie stared at the scene. She was having her first glance at a galra attack.
Her eyes were guided towards the village below as she followed a drone dipping down to deliver an attack. Katie rushed to lead the villagers to a supply ship. She rushed through the streets, scanning for people. She saw a group running her way. They saw her and faltered.
"This way! I'm with the Freedom Fighters!" she said, waving her locater like a badge of identification. They didn't question her and chased, following her. She pointed to where a few Freedom Fighters protected a supply ship. The villagers ran in that direction with no hesitation.
One of them stopped to talk to her. "Jøf ôdręł jū!" Katie didn't understand the alien's language. One of Freedom Fighter translated for her.
"She's missing her child. She want you to find it," he said. Katie nodded and raced off. She scanned the demolished town as she went. The sky was filled with grey clouds, ready to begin releasing their droplets. Katie prayed that it didn't. It'd be harder for them to run if the ground got wet.
Her eyes became darts, shooting from debris to debris, in search for this child. Her feet roughly hit the earth with each step. She could feel the panic erupt in her as she watched other escorts take more alien to the ships. She scanned each one and never saw a child that resembled the woman in any way. In fact there were no children in the groups. Only what she assumed to be teens and adults.
Where were the children? Then she heard it. A scream of a young child as a galra held him up. Katie stopped running just as the first green raindrop fell from the sky and onto her left shoulder. "Let the child go," she demanded, grabbing the galra's attention.
The galra laughed and dropped the child. He smirked and walked towards her. She whipped the staff out. Te-osh was right to have helped her fight despite her weak state. It would take awhile to properly become healthy again.
Katie waited for his attack and he delivered it, but Katie use the staff to slip under him and grab the child. The child pointed to a house that had yet been destroyed. No, it wasn't a house, but a school. A small school full of children. That's why there were none in the groups being escorted.
"Well, crap," she whispered. The galra had turned around with fury by then. "Run into the school," she told the boy. He looked at her strangely, but joined the other kids and what seemed to be the teacher inside anyway.
Katie looked around for aid, but saw none. She'd have to do this alone and fast. She was in no shape to fight. The clothes covered her slim figure and bony fingers. No one could tell and she needed to keep it that way.
The galra went to attack again, this time with more caution. Katie spun away and jabbed his side with her staff. What if she tested pressure points? Would they even work on this alien? As she ducked a shot from the galra's blaster, him having switched from fist to weapon in annoyance, she felt a bag hit her hip.
The tiny smoke bombs she was given by Te-osh! Katie slipped a hand in the bag and activated it before throwing it at the galra's feet. She dashed to the school and ushered everyone out while the galra struggled in the smoke. Katie made sure every child had been freed before dashing off with them herself.
Katie still was tired and her lack of energy was getting to her. Despite her body screaming to fall over and sleep, she kept moving, escorting the aliens to the last supply ship. The man who had translated for her awaited.
"Are there anymore?" Katie asked and he shook his head.
"Only the dead and the taken," he said as he motioned for her to also enter the ship. With one last glance towards the town, she did as asks. He followed her as the ramp began to be pulled up. As soon as the hatch was closed, the shuttle took take-off.
A blast hit the departing ship and the children screamed, clutching to their teacher. "Don't worry, children! We have this handled!" Katie called, heading for controls to see the damage. Everyone was shoulder-to-shoulder. Warmth mingled with warmth and breath with breath. She was squished and pressed against the wall as she forced her way through. When she entered, she lowered her voice. "What's the damage?"
"A wing was hit, but no big deal. If we make it to open space then we can jump," the pilot said. Another hit on the ship. "Great. That was the booster. If we don't repair it we can't jump." Katie nodded and went to the toolbox.
"Leave that to me," she said as another shot hit and red lights started flashing.
