Katie nervously shifted as cheers erupted outside the waiting area. She and Shiro were in two lines with plenty of captive aliens. A loud thud was heard from the arena and the crowd went wild. The galra on the stairs looked over the bunch of prisoners. Everyone who had gone out there up to that point had been crushed, demolished, and upright killed.
She was going to die. "I'm not going to make it! I'll never see my family again!" she choked, staring at her hands. Shiro was behind her so she had only heard his voice.
"You can do this," he said, worry hinting in his voice. The android pointed at her with the weapon. She heard Shiro grunt loudly and felt his hands push her out of the way. He snatched the weapon away. "This is my fight!" he said bringing the weapon down onto her calf.
She groaned and held it close to her. She honestly couldn't believe what was happening. Had Shiro broken? He jumped on her and she choked under his gaze. Her breath turned sharp as fear exploded inside her.
"I want blood!" he screamed as the android came up behind him. His facial expression turned to normal and he whispered, "take care of your mother." to her. The android dragged him off to the arena. He had sacrificed himself for her.
One of the prisoners - an alien with sickly gray skin and a third eye on his head - grabbed her arm to help her up. She only stared at Shiro's retreating figure with her mouth agape. Of course he did not actually have any ill intent. After that, she was returned due to the injury Shiro inflicted onto her. They never called her out to the gladiator fight again.
It was hours later that Shiro was returned to the cell. Katie stood and nearly flung herself at him, ignoring her hurt leg. "You're alive! I could've sworn I had just lost everyone!" she said as she let go of him. She felt a little dizzy, but that was just sitting on her legs for hours at work.
"I'm alive and received a new name among the galra. I'm no longer prisoner 117-9875, I'm now champion. I think they are going to do something that might be able to get us out!" he explained, a smile forming on his lips. They were both extremely hungry, so it was strange how his smiled made him look like he'd been at a feast for the past few days.
"That's great. Freedom! But what about mother? We don't know where she's commissioned!" Katie said, her joy giving into sadness. Shiro's smile also disappeared.
"I heard some galra talking. That white-haired creep didn't find any interesting traits or abilities in your mother and was sent to a work camp with the other 'weak' prisoners," he explained. Katie backed into the wall and deflated onto the floor.
"So we can't do a classic save and escape route! Its gotta be all complicated!" she said with a groan. She wasn't able to cry, she'd done enough when her mother was taken and when she thought Shiro was dead. She hadn't cried this much since she was a young child and wanted stupid silly, things.
The reality kept coming up on her like a bad dream. Shiro sat next to her and rested his head against the wall. "Then we'll have to come up with a plan," he said and closed his eyes. Katie leaned onto his shoulder and continued to sniffle with no tears into her knees.
Shiro wrapped an arm around her and allowed her too weep. That was the last time Katie cried in front of him - or anyone. It was also a rare moment she'd never get again. Soon everything changed and she was left alone to defend for herself. That wasn't for a while though.
Matt vigorously typed on the Garrison computer. He was allowed in because Katie and his mother were working for the school. He'd done it multiple times before. Sneaking into Garrison and looking at the computer's information. He'd been caught many times before, but nothing was stopping from learning the truth.
The light was flicked on and a voice rand out. "You again!? Get off my computer! How did you get past the guards?" He frowned and straightened up.
"You said that the spacecraft went down due to pilot error. I saw the video feed from your probs. There's no evidence of a crash anywhere on Kerberos!" Matt spat, glaring at the man before him.
"Those feeds are classified! I could charge you with treason for hacking into them!" he sneered and dragged Matt out of the room. He shoved him into the hallway.
"Wait! Where's my family!?" he demanded, looking back at the taller general. The man only pointed at the nearest guard.
"Escort Mr. Holt off of the premises," he said and the guard immediately took action. "And make sure every guard knows he's never allowed on Garrison property ever. again." The guard had wrapped two large hands around his upper arm by them and began tugging.
"You can't keep me out! I'll find the truth, I'll never stop!" he called. With that he was dragged away and never allowed back into Garrison again. But he had a plan.
Matt Holt was never allowed in Garrison, but Pidge Gunderson will be. Pidge was what he always called Katie and he was never more glad to have never called her that in front of any Garrison officials.
He would wear hair extensions and pretend to be a girl. Their father would understand, hopefully. He only hoped he could find his family soon. Though, now it was time to start studying. He'd first have to get into Garrison.
"Father I want hair extensions to sneak into Garrison pretending to be a girl!" he called as he entered the house.
"Okay - wait what!?" Samuel called back peaking up from where he sat in a recliner. He too had worked for Garrison, but after gaining an injury during a mission, he retired. Matt hollered a 'thanks' before entering his room. Time to start studying.
