After 2 hours, I was feeling ready to go to that surprise party, I was wearing a cute yet simple gown which I received as a birthday gift from my best friend Ashley on my twentieth birthday present but I never wore it before, I paired it with my silver heels and tied my hair in a simple and elegant bun and lastly I applied a light makeup and finally I took my purse and drove to the venue.
It was exactly 8 o'clock when I reached my destination. I parked the jeep in the parking lot then walked inside where I met Mr. Smith's secretary Mrs. Mary who was about forty years old but was really nice to me, she carefully explained me my tasks and made sure to help me each time I felt nervous, I spent the next 30 minutes welcoming the guests and supervising the waiters so as not to expect any complaints from the guests. The place was so nicely decorated with red and white balloons and red roses scattered on the pathway, just in the center there was a table with a delicious white swan designed cake, a beautiful bouquet of red roses, two bottles of expensive champagnes and some red and white smokeless scented candles and other decorative items. It was already half past eight, I started to get bored when I finally noticed the Smith family entering the ballroom, the crowd of people including me, turned our attention towards the main door and started applauding just then I saw Mr. Steve and his beautiful wife Mrs. Clara, they looked perfect together as an elegant old couple, as they walked in, arm in arm, everyone started to congratulate them for their 40th wedding anniversary.
After a while, I saw Ryan walking in with a beautiful brunette with his arm placed safely around her waist. They both looked so happy in their little conversation. Ryan was looking dashing in his black suit while the brunette was looking stunning as she wore an elegant burgundy gown which hugged her curves perfectly, she seemed to be a model and somehow looked perfect with Ryan as a couple. I felt hurt for a while but then I decided not to think about it and continued on doing my job. All the time I maintained my distance with them and ignored the attention I was getting from others.
After a while, Mr. Steve started his speech by thanking the guests for attending his wedding anniversary and lastly he looked directly at me and gave me a smug smile before announcing the official engagement of his one and only son, the CEO of Smith Enterprises to his business partner's daughter who happens to be the brunette I saw with Ryan earlier, her name was Stella Lewis and she was actually a model and had one of those mesmerizing grey eyes. Everyone congratulated them while they both happily nodded and exchanged rings, I stood there, feeling helpless and broken again, I knew if I continue to stand here any longer I would certainly break down into tears and end up humiliating myself furthermore so I excused myself and grab my purse to go back home when suddenly Mr. Steve came towards me, looking at that satisfactory smile plastered on his face, I immediately knew that this was all planned beforehand so I quickly wiped my tears with my hand and faked a smile at him.
"Good job, Miss. Collins", he said.
"Thank you Sir", I replied.
"Well what do you think about the new couple?"
"They look charming together, I'm happy for them", I somehow managed to smile.
"You better be!"
That's all he said and left, I quickly walked to the parking lot and drove back home. Once I was inside the house, I closed the door and leaned on it and I tried hard not to but I just couldn't stop the tears from flowing down onto my cheeks, I placed my hands over my mouth so as not to make any noise as I cried, I know I should stop loving him, I know I should leave, I know I should but something's holding me back and I don't know if it's the old happiness that I felt with him, or the fact I know that I'll never be able to love someone else like this again.
