Certain things will always be a guarantee in life;

The sun will rise tomorrow.

The stars will shine at night.

The sky will still be blue and grass will still be green.

And Vik will have school the next morning.

Much to his disliking, school is a guarantee for the next ten years of his life (or more if he continues his education.) At least the other guarantees are more pleasurable to him. The sunrise and moonrise will always be there for him.

They'll rise and with it his spirit whenever the uncertainties in life fail him;

His mother can't make it home in time to hug him before bed.

His father's face isn't to be seen all day because he's working 12 hours.

All the hours he could be spending playing as a child are spent doing homework.

His brother's status is yet to be known on whether or not he's alive.

Vik knelt at his bedroom window staring out into the blackest of night. The stars twinkle as if they are winking back at him. The tears on his cheeks dry. He can feel the hole in his chest continually grow over the past nine months. At least the stars keep their promises.

The cinnamon boy sniffled, pressing his fingertips to the cold glass.

"Surely that drafty window isn't nice to sit by." A faintly familiar voice but all too unforgettable rings through the silent room.

Vik's head whipped around like an owl's. There stood a tall man in an army uniform. His stomach dropped and burst into a million butterflies. A tiny squeal-scream escaped with a gasp.

"Simon!"

Vik's small feet thumped loudly against the floor as he bounded towards his older brother, leaping into his arms.

All of his senses went numb. The only things he could feel were his brother's hands and the unbelievable relief knowing that he is still alive.

"Why were you crying, Vikky?" Simon mumbled.

"I missed you." He sobbed relentlessly. Simon squeezed even tighter. A man has never been so lucky than to see what he treasures the most again. A hug expressed more compassion in that one minute than ten letters could ever say.

"Vik I'm so happy to see you." Simon would do anything for his younger brother. He means the world to him.

When and if Simon comes home is never a guarantee but when he does, Vik can be guaranteed there's hope out there.

"Never let go... please..."

"I would never. I love you too much."
