1950's cinema

JJ had finally gathered enough courage to ask Simon out. Sort of.

He more or else just invited Simon to come see the opening of a new action film at the cinema. To JJ, it was a baby date. But to Simon, it was only a movie.

The two bought their tickets and walked inside the theater. It was Saturday night so the place was jam packed with boys and girls their age. The boys wore their leather jackets with pride while the girls spun in their long skirts and buckled saddle shoes.

JJ examined his light-skinned friend in his plaid buttoned up shirt and tan khakis. JJ looked back at himself; He didn't have as much money as Simon. JJ only had jeans and a dirty white shirt and flannel. How was he ever supposed to impress his crush with this dumpster clothing? Simon looked at his friend with a big shiny smile.

"Let's get in line and buy some popcorn." he prompted.

"Yeah." JJ smiled back. All three cashiers had long lines. "But which one? They're all filled up!" Simon's crystal eyes scanned the three options. JJ couldn't help but stare at his eyes.

"Oh! The middle one, the middle one!" Simon exclaims. "The worker there is super attractive." he whispered. JJ peered over and saw a man with dark brown hair and matching beard. JJ could feel jealousy rise within him. This is their night. If Simon got a crush on someone else, JJ would be crushed.

"Don't even bother. He's probably straight anyways." JJ huffed, crossing his arms.

"Wow thanks." Simon glared. Then he sighed, "But you're probably right. The cute guys are always straight." Simon was also gay. But only JJ knew. On the contrary, Simon did not know that JJ too, was homosexual. "I swear I'm the only gay person in the world..."

"Maybe you are."

"So I truly am defective then." Simon hummed out. Now JJ made him feel bad. Great. "I'm gonna get in line. You can go pick our seats." He started to walk away.

"Simon, I'm sorry."

"It's cool. I know you were only joking." Simon shrugged.

JJ couldn't stop replaying that one moment in his head. He could have said something supportive but no, he had to be mean. Not that he meant to be. It's not like what he said was even funny! JJ felt guilty. Why was his night going so badly? Could it possibly get any worse? Not as long as he turns things around.

JJ found two empty seats toward the back and wedged in the middle of the row. Careful to not step on people, JJ shimmied his way to the seats. It wasn't too long before Simon himself was shimming down the row. He had a large popcorn with a medium soda in both of his hands.

"Are you good?" JJ checked not wanting Simon to drop everything.

"Yeah man." Simon took his seat to the right of JJ. "So," He set down the drink. "That register boy I was... you know." He didn't want the people around him to start beating him up so he avoided obvious clues that would give away his sexuality.

"Yeah?"

"I guess you were wrong." Simon smirked.

"Huh? Why?"

"I got his number!" he excitedly whispered.

"Really?" JJ's heart shattered. "Are you sure it wasn't a friend thing?"

Simon took a piece of paper out of his pocket and showed it to his friend. There were random numbers and a heart at the end.

"He even winked at me!"

"Good for you!" JJ winced out yet still managing to sound sincerely happy for his friend. "See? You aren't defective. And even if you are, there's someone else you can be defective with." Simon smiled and blushed a bit at this. JJ was relieved he was able to redeem himself.

"Yeah... I guess so." The blonde put the piece of paper back in his pocket. Everyone slowly got quiet when the movie started.

Halfway through the film, during a more mild scene, Simon excused himself to quickly use the restroom.

"I told you to go during the previews!" JJ hissed under his breath.

"This movie is boring me anyways. I'll be right back." Simon left his jacket and shuffled away.

JJ internally sighed. Maybe he should just flat out say, "Simon. I like you. As more than a friend." But that just seemed like a mistake waiting to happen. He threatens ruining their friendship. JJ looked at Simon's jacket. A tiny white triangle peeked out. That phone number taunted him.

He couldn't help it. The temptation of evil was too strong. JJ stole the paper. Simon was not going to get in a relationship unless it was with JJ.

Simon and JJ walked home together. JJ offered to take his tall friend home first. When they walked up to his front door, Simon turned on his heels, grinning and waiting for a goodbye. JJ stood awkwardly with his hands in his pocket, chewing his lip. Dare he be bold?

"So, like, see ya around?" Simon raised an eyebrow.

"Um yeah. Have a good night." JJ took his hands out his pockets to give a hug but when he did, the paper with the phone number came out and fell to the ground.

"Oops, you dropped somethin'."

JJ quickly reached down to grab it but by then Simon was already holding it.

"JJ..." Simon's big dough eyes looked helplessly. "This is Josh's phone number. That he gave to me at the cinema!"

"I..."

"I thought I lost it! Why, JJ?" Simon's voice quivered. "Do you really just hate the fact that I'm gay?"

"No! Not all! It's... because..."

"Because what?!"

"Because I like you!" he blurted out. "I'm also gay. I have a crush on you." Simon's eyes widened.

"Stop yanking my chain!"

"I swear I'm not messin' with you. I got jealous when you thought the cashier boy was cute and then you got his number. I just don't want to lose you to someone else."

"I can't believe you would do such a thing."

"You don't hate me now do you?"

"No. I just need some time to think about you and Josh." Simon opened his door. "Who I want to focus on." he muttered to himself.

"I'm sorry. Goodnight, Simon." JJ started to slowly walk backwards.

"I wish you had told me sooner. Bye." Simon waved before walking inside. If only he had known JJ liked him back - he wouldn't have moved on.

Later that night, Simon called Josh.
