The next day at work was horrible. I was tired as hell and the cheerfulness of my boss seemed to have faded. I couldn't concentrate on the exam tasks and drew little sketches in my notebook. I thanked god when lunch break was finally there. I got out a sandwich and some fruits, opened the window of my little office and leaned back in my chair. I was just taking a bite of my apple, when there was a knock on my door. "Come on in", I said. Josh was standing in my office. I didn't reckon with him. "Heya, sit down", I said pointing to the chair next to me. "Hi Kay", he said. "How's work?" „Same as usual. Just trying to get through the day, aha." „So, Lee told me you guys went out yesterday." I felt like I got caught. "Uhh.. yeah.. I just showed him the Reilly's you know", I said. „I know." Ok... what else did he know? „See Kay, I was afraid this would happen", he started. Now I was totally confused. Was Lee some kind of creep or what was he going to tell me now? "What's wrong with going out with Lee?", I asked, a pissed undertone in my voice. "Oh, no no, nothing. He's a cool guy, I wouldn't hang out with him if he wasn't. I'm just afraid.. because.. you know.. he's not gonna be here for long, I don't want your heart to get broken once more, y'know?" He was totally hinting at my last boyfriend. Thinking back to Vince, a cold shiver went through my body. We were together for almost a year, talking about moving in together when from one day to the next it occurred to him that he hated LA and wanted to go back to Virginia. Yeah, he basically left me for dead-end village. He couldn't go much further as it seemed to me. I was crushed. Within one week, he was gone. Through mutual friends I found out that he got back together with his ex soon after. I think they're even married by now. Good for him. "I just met him once, okay?", I said. "Yeah, alright, just wanted to let you know." "But..What do you actually mean by he's not gonna be here for long?", I got curious. "Well, he's only here for the winter quarter. I think he's got one and a half months to go and he'll be back in Manchester to finish his studies there", Josh said. "Aha, I see. You know, I'm not planning on marrying him. He's just a cool guy, nothing more", I tried to sound unimpressed. I could tell Josh wasn't buying it though. "Right", he said. „So Josh, I'm afraid I got some work to do", I said, trying to put him off. "Yeah, me, too. See you around", he said and left. Ugh. I wanted to go home and sink into my blanket. Can't anything be easy for once? I couldn't even figure out if I was really into Lee. But he'd be gone anyways, so why even bother? He probably just wanted a quick fling before he left home. I put the rest of my sandwich back in my bag, closed the window and got back to work. Not that this was going anywhere, but oh well.
