It all started in that class we were both in.
I can still clearly remember how deep your voice sounded, how your stance made such impression, and how intelligently you spoke in front of the class with such confidence that only you possess. Everyone, particularly I, was in awe the moment you stood up as Prof Ruiz called out your name and smartly stated your insight regarding the topic we were discussing. It was just amazing, the way you put the class into silence.
I silently admired you since then.
I often steal glances at you during class discussions. You never noticed because you were always looking down at your book. Your silence amuses me. It’s just that, you need not speak to let people know you exist. You are capable of saying so many things without uttering a single word. You are intelligent, but you were never the kind who boasts and degrades others.
I looked up to you and eventually, you became my hero, my inspiration. I was never the type who studies and reads. But after hearing you speak that day, I started to get motivated. Because of you, I challenged myself to be a better student, to study more, and participate in class as frequently as I could.
Then, I just woke up one day discoursing with you about a topic thrown to the class by our Professor. I never imagined myself having such confidence to even answer you back despite the perfection of your statements. It wasn’t a direct conversation, yet it was enough for me to get awestruck once again by your wit and wisdom.
When you submitted to my final remark and sat on your seat with that humbling smile on your face, I couldn’t help but jump for joy inside of me. You let me win our small debate! I was really happy and I felt fulfilled.
I admired you even more for your humility and unfailing kindness.
After that class, you surprisingly came up to me and asked about something you said you did not get to understand during the discussion. I was totally blown away by your presence beside me. I couldn’t think straight. My mind started to wander some place else. It was a good thing I had Meg with me and she snapped me back to reality.
“Naya, nahahalata ka na,” she told me in a low voice.
Enchanted by the moment, I looked at you again and you were just smiling that beautiful smile of yours. “Is it okay if I borrow some time from you, Naya?”
Gah, the way you said my name was just magical. I almost hyperventilated. Wait, what? You know my name?!
“Magpapaturo sana ako sayo about this.” You shifted your captivating deep black eyes to the paper you were holding, then back at me. “It’s okay if it’s not okay, though” you said. “Well…” you slightly scratched the back of your head, “it would be okay too i-if it’s, you know, okay with y-you.” You chuckled softly. You were stuttering, and it was really cute! With your braces and pair of dimples, you looked really adorable.
I couldn’t help but smile. This was the first time you talked to me. You were really talking to me!
“Just say yes, Naya,” Meg lightly poked my side. “Mukha kang ewan dyan, girl.”
