#16 Mine

I sit in the corner of the room watching unfamiliar faces socialize around the house.

My friend Stacy stumbles out in fort of me.

"Hey N-Nattie..." She chuckles and then burps. "Oops my bad..."

"Stacy, are you drunk?" I ask.

"No..." She smiles.

"How many beers have you had?" I say while crossing my arms.

"Only a couple," she chuckles again.

She grabs a drink out of someone hand.

"Do you want one?" She shoves the red plastic cup in my face.

"No!" I yell over the loud music.

"Then I will take it." She tilts her head back and begins to drink.

"Stop that!" I take it out of her hand and throw it on the ground.

"Hey! What was that-"

"Stacy! You are my ride home! How am I supposed to get home?"

She shrugs her shoulders.

"Look, I think you have had enough partying for tonight, I'm going to call my brother. He will take us home."

"Why are you such a Debbie downer? Geez relax, have a drink, dance with a stranger, ooo! Go sing karaoke!"

"No Stacy, we are going home!" I yell.

She grabs my wrist and pulls me up onto the stage.

"Cut the music!" She yells at the DJ.

"What are you doing?" I say under my breath.

"I want you to be noticed," she whispers and the smell of alcohol overwhelms me.

"Hey guys! So this is my friend Nattie and she is going to sing for you!"

They all start to clap. She shoves the microphone into my hand, stumbles off the stage, and whispers something to the DJ. He nods and she enters the crowd.

Everyone stares at me and is dead silent. Ugh, why won't the music start?

I hear the beginning of one of my favorite songs begin to play. I take a breath and begin to sing.

Uh, oh, oh
Uh, oh, oh

You were in college working part time waiting tables
Left a small town, never looked back
I was a flight risk with a fear of fallin'
Wondering why we bother with love if it never lasts

I say "Can you believe it?
As we're lying on the couch?"
The moment I can see it.
Yes, yes, I can see it now.

Do you remember, we were sitting there by the water?
You put your arm around me for the first time.
You made a rebel of a careless man's careful daughter.
You are the best thing that's ever been mine.

Flash forward and we're taking on the world together,
And there's a drawer of my things at your place.
You learn my secrets and you figure out why I'm guarded,
You say we'll never make my parents' mistakes.

But we got bills to pay,
We got nothing figured out,
When it was hard to take,
Yes, yes, this is what I thought about.

Do you remember, we were sitting there by the water?
You put your arm around me for the first time
You made a rebel of a careless man's careful daughter
You are the best thing that's ever been mine.

Do you remember all the city lights on the water?
You saw me start to believe for the first time
You made a rebel of a careless man's careful daughter
You are the best thing that's ever been mine.

Oh, oh, oh, oh

I look over at the front door and this guy that I have had a crush on for like forever walks in. He looks at me surprised and joins the crowd.

And I remember that fight
Two-thirty AM
As everything was slipping right out of our hands
I ran out crying and you followed me out into the street
Braced myself for the "Goodbye."
'Cause that's all I've ever known
Then you took me by surprise
You said, "I'll never leave you alone."

You said, "I remember how we felt sitting by the water.
And every time I look at you, it's like the first time.
I fell in love with a careless man's careful daughter.
She is the best thing that's ever been mine."

Hold on, make it last
Hold on, never turn back

You made a rebel of a careless man's careful daughter
You are the best thing that's ever been mine.

Do you believe it?
We're gonna make it now,
and I can see it,
I can see it now

The songs ends and everyone cheers. I blush and join the group.

"That was great!" cheers Stacy.

"Thanks, but can we go home now?" I complain.

"No not yet! Come on! Let's party!"

I see a popular girl behind Stacy push her into me, causing her drink to spill all over me. A ton of people around me laugh and take pics.

I hear different things like "What a freak!" "Oh this is so going on twitter!" "Can you send me that?"

I look around and the popular girl flashes me an evil grin.

I feel overwhelmed and run outside into the backyard. They have a little white gazebo in the back so I go in there. I plop down on the white bench underneath the lights.

Don't cry... don't cry... not here

I look down at my shirt, great, it is ruined. And this cold breeze is not really happening.

I look up and see my crush by the end of the stairs.

"Oh," I straighten myself up, "hi..."

"Can I come up?" he asks.

"Sure." I say.

He comes and sits next to me.

"I'm sorry about what happened." he says.

"It's ok, I'm already the school freak so I guess it doesn't matter." I say looking down. My legs had tons of goosebumps. I feel a jacket go aroun my arms.

"Robbie, you don't have to do that-"

"I want to, love."

"Why are you talking to me? I mean, isn't this going to ruin your reputation?"

"I don't care what others think about me, and you shouldn't either. To be honest, I honestly don't think you are a freak." He smiles.

"Thanks..." I blush. Once again, another awkward silence.

"So... you are really a great singer Nattie. You were so be- I mean that sound was beautiful." He rubs the back of his neck.

"Did you just say that I am beautiful?" I chuckle.

"Maybe." He smiles, "Do you need a ride home?"

"Yes actually, is that ok?" I ask.

"It would be my pleasure." He stands up. "Shall we?"

He holds out his arm and I take it.

"Hey, before I drop you off, would you want to go to Starbucks for something to warm you up?" He asks.

"I would love to."
