#44 Promises
"I don't know how to say this, but here it goes," I took a breath, "I want to go home." I looked up at him.
"What?" He asked.
"Look. I love it here, but I miss my friends and my high school life. And you and the lost boys have been wonderful-"
"I don't want to here this right now." He turned and walked quickly into the trees.
"Peter wait-" I ran after him.
"What Jackie?" He turned around harshly. To his surprise, I planted a kiss onto his lips. He tensed up at first but then he placed his hands on my waist. He pulled me closer and held me in his arms.
"I love you Peter." I placed my forehead on his.
"I love you too." He sighed, "But I will let you go."
"What? Really?" I looked into his eyes. They were filled with passion and hurt.
"Of course I don't want you to leave, but I want you to be happy."
"I will come back and visit you, I promise. Okay?" I stuck out my pinky.
"Okay" He linked our fingers.
It has been two years since I have last seen Peter. I should have known that he wouldn't come get me, I mean I was only 16 and very stupid. Of course there has not been a day that goes by when I don't think of him. There always will be a piece in the back of my mind that he will descend down from the sky and take me back to Neverland, but I know it's insane to think about that.
I stood at the barre, looking at my reflection. My friends were all grabbing their dance bags.
"Hey Jackie, do you wanna go get some fro-yo with us?"
"Oh, um, not tonight. I'm going to practice my solo a little bit longer."
"Oh ok, maybe next time?" They asked.
"Sure." I smiled and then focused back on to the mirror.
Once they left, I stretched out making sure all my muscles were loose and warmed up.
I then placed on my ghillies (a type of Irish dancing shoe) and stood up. I ran my solo in my head, preparing myself to do it full out. Ok, I'm ready.
I hit the play button on the boom box and ran to the center of the floor. I positioned myself in the correct pose. The upbeat music began to play, making my mind set to my next dance steps. I went to my happy place, zoning out while I did some beats, cuts, overs, lifts, and sevens. My feet gracefully hit the floor and stayed in rhythm with the music. My mind felt free.
Once the last beat hit, I stood there with my arms up in the ending position. My chest rose and fell as I practiced my signature smile.
For some reason I felt like I was being watched. I glanced at the window and saw a familiar face there for two seconds and then it disappeared.
"Peter?" I asked under my breath.
I ran out into the lobby. The receptionist was looking down at her computer.
"Mrs. Michaels? Did you see a guy standing outside? About this tall?" I held my hand up a half of a foot taller than me.
"No, I'm sorry dear. No one is in the parking lot." She looked at me like I am crazy, "Do you need a ride home?"
"Oh, no, I'm fine." I walked back into the studio shaking my head. Wow I must have looked insane. Why would Peter even be here?
I packed my shoes away and put on my coat.
"Good night!" I said as I walked out of the building.
I pulled out my phone and dialed my mom's number.
"Hey, mom. You are probably busy since you didn't pick up. Well I'm done with dance class so I should be home in about-"
I saw an image turn the dark street corner.
"Um gotta go." I hung up and dropped my stuff in the snow. I took off sprinting toward the figure. Once I turned the corner, there wasn't anyone there. Being my disappointed self, I turned slowly back around to see the one and only Peter Pan standing five feet away from me.
"Peter?" I smiled.
"Jackie!" He ran toward me.
When I reached him, he picked me up high in his arms and spun me around.
I clung on to him.
"It feels like I haven't seen you in forever." I said into his chest.
"I know love, I know.... but I'm here now and we are together and that's all that counts."
"Was that you in the window?!?" I laughed.
"Yeah," He rubbed the back of his neck, "I was so scared to talk to you and I was mesmerized by your talent. You looked so happy and I thought if you saw me that I would pull you away from your dreams-"
I interrupted him with yet another one of my famous silencing kiss.
"Peter, you are my dreams." I cupped his face.
"I love you Jackie." He said in his adorable crisp accent.
"I love you too." He kissed my forehead.
"Are you ready, to come back and visit me?"
"I am Peter, and this time, I won't leave."
"You promise?" He held out his pinky.
"I promise." I connected our sweet and lovely bond.
