Prologue

The baby's cries echoed through the wooden cabin and a few feminine bodies scurried to get it cleaned and towelled. The mother was anxious, as was the father, however, the reason for both their anxieties was different.

A weak woman placed the now cleaned and wrapped child in the mother's arms, whispering a few words in her ear that brought another string of tears from her eyes at the news. The pain she was going through minutes earlier had weakened her and now the grief of the soon to follow separation only worsened her condition.

No sooner had she brought the child to her bosom to shower it with the love it would be robbed of for the rest of its life, the child was snatched from her arms by the father who yelled for the identity of the new-born. Hesitantly came the answer.

"It's a...girl... Katsuro sama."

The infant's cries mingled with that of the mother's when the clan leader, Tanogata Katsuro, inhumanely walked out of the cabin, barely able to keep himself controlled at the birth of the fifth daughter after just two sons.

He ordered a few servants to make preparations for his departure to the forests at the edge of the country where he would leave that bundled child, bawling and unloved, in the hands of nature. He had no need for another female in his family.

However much nature might be indifferent to the pain and suffering of humankind, it doesn't turn its face away when somebody has need of it.

As Katsuro placed the helpless, defenceless nuisance on a stump and left, nature welcomed her as its own, soothing the child with its mysterious calm and lulling her into sleep.

The arms of Tanogata threw her away but those of Morinome accepted her and all must have been according to the turning wheel of fates.
