Lauren's POV

I remembered when it first happened, the moment that would change my life forever.

My mother and me were on our way back from my 9th grade dance recital. I was blasting Maroon 5 on the radio singing along with my mother when it happened.

A black SUV was speeding right towards us. I heard my mom scream while trying to swerve the car away from the SUV who was on our lane.

But it was too late the SUV was too fast and it was about to hit us and in my panic I felt wind rushing through my hands. I held my hands out in front of me and that's when I saw it, air bubbles forming a barrier in front of our car.

The SUV drove right into it and I heard or more like felt what my body wanted me to do. After the impact I moved my arms to the right pushing the smashed SUV with it. My mother tried to get control of the car and was heading for a tree. I put my arms forward and made the shield again except it wasn't where I wanted it to be.

The shield came from the right side of our car where I was sitting, it pushed the car sideways so only the back of the car made contact with the tree. It was quiet and all I could think was what the hell happened and how I manage to do something I was never capable of before. That's when I heard my mom calling me.

"LAUREN OH MY GOD ARE YOU OKAY OR HURT ANYWHERE," my mom screamed while unfastening her seatbelt to reach me.

I was still in shock and couldn't move or say anything no matter how much I wanted too.

   "Hold on I'm calling 911."
I finally found my voice and movement when my mom pulled me from the car and held me.

"Okay honey I'm going to check on the other car wait here for me you might be injured."
I didn't want her to leave but I know her being a nurse she can't help but help others.

I phoned in the accident and waited for the authorities to arrive. While I waited I starting thinking about what I had done. I slowly looked at the back of my hands than the palms of them, that's when I noticed something that wasn't their before but it felt hot like it was branded on there.

On my right wrist I saw words that were glowing but were soon starting to fade. When it finally did I saw what
it said. "I'm trying to help."

I was shocked out of my mind because I knew what this was. It was a soul mark, and the only ones who had them were mutants so they wouldn't ever be alone being different as they were. That's when it hit me and I was shocked but mostly terrified. If I had this soul mark and I managed to do what I did to save us that meant I was a mutant.

"Holy shit," I whispered so my mom wouldn't hear. How can this be possible I thought to myself. My parents were humans so was my brother so how was I able to be a mutant, my parents weren't like me. The first thought was maybe I was adopted but I look like my mom too much for that too be possible. I wanted to scream and tell my mom so she can help me but I didn't and deep down I knew why.

Mutants weren't welcome in today's society. They were feared and labeled dangerous. I thought to what I did and how my barrier smashed the other cars front probably injuring the driver and maybe passengers.

I not only saved my mom and me but also injured the others. I listened and heard my mom helping the driver out of the car but he was bloody. That's when I saw a little boy probably 10 years of age sitting next to my mother crying. He had cuts but he was in better condition than the father.

I slowly got up and watched as my mom was speaking to the man but he was in pain and couldn't make out what he was saying. I looked down ready to cry my eyes out. I did that, sure it was the other drivers fault, but I was the one who did the most damaged to them.
