(..Sam’s POV..)
I must have blacked out for a moment because I came to as Liam was rushing over to me. My eyes darted back over to the older man standing behind Liam. “No…no…” I mumbled as I tried to scoot myself away from both of them. Each time I would try to stand I would slip in the coffee that had spilled across the floor. “This can’t be real…” my voice cracked as my back hit the cabinet. I reached into the drawer beside me trying to find something to use as a weapon, pulling out a large kitchen knife and holding it out in front of me. “Just… this can’t be real… please let me wake up.” The look on Liam’s face was heartbreaking. “Sam… baby what is wrong…?” He eased himself onto the floor, crawling slowly towards me. My heart began pounding and I tried my best to stand, my legs shaking under my weight. “Just… don’t…. stay back please…” I begged, hot tears running down my cheeks as I took a step backwards to the door. My mind was a blur, did he know about this? Were they working together in some weird way? Is this evil human being that destroyed me the father of the man I am in love with? All these questions flooded over me as I turned and stumbled out of the room. I had officially hit the fight or flight mode; my mind had definitely settled on flight. I stumbled down the hallway, my vision blurry with tears. I had no idea where to run so I went to the only place I could think of; Liam’s room. I slammed the door shut behind me just in time to hear Liam banging on the door. I dropped the kitchen knife to the floor and covered my ears with my hands. “Go away…. Go away…” I begged as I slid down the wall beside the door.
(..Liam’s POV..)
After my quick shower I threw on a pair of sweatpants and headed to the kitchen; I wanted to spend my whole morning with Sam wrapped up in my arms. As I stepped into the kitchen I was surprised to see my dad standing in the kitchen with Sam. “Good morning, Dad. I see you’ve met…” My eyes moved over to Sam and my heart stopped when I noticed she was standing in a puddle of coffee, her glass shattered on the floor. Her face was as white as a ghost as she stared at my dad. “Sam? Sam, what’s the matter?” I asked her, worry bubbling in my stomach as her body swayed and she slid to the floor. I rushed over to her as I was about to pull her into my arms she pulled away. “No… no…” She mumbled, her body slipping and sliding in the coffee as she shuffled backwards across the floor. I was at a loss for words as I watched the only girl I had ever loved trying to flee away from me in fear. “Just… this can’t be real… stay back please…” her scared voice called out. Before I could say anything, she reached into one of the drawers and pulled out a large kitchen knife; pointing it towards my dad and me. “Sam… baby what is wrong…?” I carefully got to the floor, moving closer to her slowly trying my best not to frighten her more than she already was. I couldn’t understand what was happening, she was find no more than fifteen minutes ago and now she was terrified. As I made a move towards her she climbed to her feet, her whole body trembling. “Just… don’t…. stay back please…” she begged, tears now staining her cheeks. I tried to speak but the words didn’t come out; she took a few steps backwards before she turned and darted down the hall. I jumped to my feet, my focus turning to my father. “What the fuck happened?” I yelled, anger bursting inside of me chest. My dad casually shrugged as he leaned against the counter. “How do you know Ms. Martinez?” He asked, showing no emotion to the situation. I ignored his question and rushed out of the kitchen and down the hallway. I made it to the door just as Sam closed it in my face; my hands slammed against the door. “Go away… go away…” She begged, “Baby open the door please. Tell me what’s going on!” Panic was rushing through my veins as I tried to break open the door. Repeatedly, I slammed my shoulder against the door, after a few blows I heard a loud cracking sound as the door broke away from the frame. I rushed into the room to find Sam huddled against the wall, her hands pinned to her ears. She was softly muttering something under her breath that I couldn’t understand. My arms instantly wrapped around her, tugging her small frame into my lap. At first, she tried to break free of my hold but soon her body went limp, her shoulders shaking as the soft sobs escaped her mouth. “Sam, please, tell me what’s wrong…?” My arms held her tightly as my body rocked her side to side. “You… you… and he…” she stuttered, “He… he is your dad?” She bellowed as she looked up at me, her eyes red and full of sadness. What did my dad have to do with this? My face twisted up in confusion as I looked down at her. “Baby, what does my dad have to do with anything?” My voice seemed more irritated then I really was, I was just desperate to find out what had gotten her so upset. “EVERYTHING!” She yelled pushing me away from her. I couldn’t let her go, I reached back for her, forcing her into my arms again. “Sam, I don’t understand what is happening, you have to tell me!” She hit and pushed on me trying her hardest to get away. “He ruined my life! It’s all his fault! He is why I tried to kill myself!” She screamed into my face. My heart sank into my chest; what did she mean he was the reason. “Baby I am so lost, I don’t understand…” I held her face in my hands so that we were eye to eye. “Baby please, you are going to have to explain to me what’s going on?”
(..Sam’s POV..)
His thumbs rubbed gently over my tear stained cheeks, his eyes locked on mine. He didn’t know, I could tell by the look in his eyes he had no idea what his father had done to me. “he…he…” I stuttered, could I really tell Liam about what his father did to me? What if Liam wanted nothing to do with me anymore? Liam meant so much to me and now because of my past we might lose all of it. “Shhh…” He cooed, pulling me back into his arms. “Sam, you can tell me. I can’t make things better if you don’t tell me what’s wrong.” He was right, if he loved me this wouldn’t ruin us and if it did ruin us it only proved that everything between us wasn’t real. Slowly, I pulled myself out of his arms, scooting my back against the wall. “You really don’t know?” I asked, my voice cutting in and out. He sat there for a moment as if he was trying to decode everything before he slowly shook his head. I let out an anxious laugh, my head leaning back to rest against the wall.
“I know your dad.” I said bluntly, my eyes lifting to meet his again. “What do you mean? How?” Liam edged a little closer to me. Another anxious laugh flew past my lips. “Your dad. He was my parents drug dealer. When they were late with his money he would do terrible things to me.” I paused for a minute, watching Liam’s face distort with anger. “He would choke me… his hands would wrap so tightly around my throat I was sure he was going to kill me… he would touch me in ways no man should touch a child… he beat me more times than my own parents did.” Anger bubbled deep inside my belly as the memories left me with a sour taste. I watched him carefully, I think I had left him speechless. His eyes seemed cloudy like he was lost in thought. “This has to be a mistake…” He whispered under his breath. An obnoxious laugh poured from my lips, “You think I’m lying?” His face dropped, and he grabbed my hand. “Fuck, Sam no… I don’t think your lying…I’m just… shocked.”
There was a loud knock on the broken door, both of our heads snapped towards the opening as Liam’s father entered the room. “That was all a bit more than I thought my morning would add up to.” He mumbled as he leaned against the wall eyeing us both. “Son, so how do you know Ms. Martinez?” His deep voice made my stomach churn. Liam stood to his feet in front of me, as if shielding me from his father’s eyes. “The fuck to you mean how do I know her? She’s my fucking girlfriend.” His voice filled with venom.
