Josh liked El.

He felt his heartbeat speed up, anger ran through his body. How could I be so selfish to think like this while the girl tried to kill herself? While she was recovering?  Josh thought, unaware that his kind actions came to a halt.

"Can I tell you something?" She mumbled, he could tell that she was struggling to stay awake. "I wanted to see you one last time, and when you came barging into my door I suddenly hated you for it." Josh's blood ran cold, he let his hands fall off of her back.

"Do you still hate me?" He questioned, then took a deep breath to calm himself.

"I hate everything, everything but laying here listening to this heartbeat. Could you stay here a little longer so I can hear it for a few more minutes?"

"Anything for you, El." He whispered, wrapping his arm around her.

He opened his eyes, Josh was surprised to see that he fell asleep. El was breathing softly, her back facing him. Out of panic he quickly got out of bed and noticed the doctor standing in the doorway.

"I never got the chance to speak to you properly, could you step out into the hall with me?"

Without saying anything he left the room, glancing at El as he left the doorway. He let his shoulders fall, disappointed in himself for not saving her sooner. The doctor patted his shoulder, sympathy shown on his face.

"What you did was amazing, I'm sorry for the situation you are in. But you need to understand that if something goes wrong-"

"She could try and do it again. I know." Josh stated, his voice wavering.

He sat next to her, she moved over so he could lay down. She rested her head against his chest, breathing softly.

"You don't want to like me, I'm damaged." El croaked, tears stained his shirt once more.

"Well El, that's for me to decide, not you. And I don't think you're damaged, I think you just need someone to show you the joys of life."

"I think you're wrong." She stared before closing her eyes, falling back asleep. Josh sighed and softly got up, wrote a note telling her that he'd be back. With that he stepped out of the hospital and went back home, he opened his bag and held the key to changing everything in his hand.

The book.
