Fenton grimaced. He was looking at the inside of the stables and it wasn't pretty.
Two horses lay on the ground, heads lowered. One cow was barely standing.
And nothing more. "Where are the rest?" Fenton asked one of the ghosts that escorted him here.
The ghosts stayed at the door and looked pretty uncomfortable. One of them spoke up. "Umm. We usually don't keep the sick ones alive. We don't want it spreading more than it already is. Queen Pandora told us to keep these for you."
Fenton sucked in air through his teeth. He rubbed his hands together to get rid of his nervousness. He glanced at the ghosts. "You can go if you want. You don't have to stay."
They hesitated even though they looked ready to bolt. "Are you sure?"
Fenton nodded. They weren't medics. They didn't need to be anywhere near the sick. The two said their thanks as they made to walk as far away as they could.
The cow shuffled and Fenton's attention was back to it. He slowly approached it and plopped on the ground next to it. He grimaced at the contaminated air near the beast. "Common, you can do this," he tried to encourage himself. "You're doing this for them. If you do it right, you'll be helping the cow." And if he got enough control over his powers and using them in this way, he might be able to change Phantom's appearance. He smiled. We would look just like before. Nothing will have changed except for him getting other powers.
He sighed and put that thought in the back of his head. He had to concentrate on this first.
The cow let out a small whimper and Fenton flinched. He carefully layed his hand on the animal's neck and stroked it. "Alright, calm down. This isn't going to hurt," he reassured the cow and himself. The cow didn't answer.
Fenton took a deep breath and closed his eyes. He directed his attention to the beast under his hand and the ectoplasm in it. He inspected the molecules. Much more in depth than he had ever done. It was fascinating. He never could have thought ectoplasm could be so complex. Man, he was starting to sound like his dad.
It was different from the ectoplasm that made up the air. He knew there should be a difference. The air is breathable. A piece of meat isn't. But he hadn't really thought much about it. Now though, he could feel it. Not only the state of matter. The whole system was different.
Really, the air and the body only had one little thing in common. That one gene which was how the Eduqa traveled.
Fenton spread his focus to the center of the body. Where the core was.
He gasped in wonder.
The core was pulsing. Not like a beating heart, but like an electric shock. Sending currents of energy throughout the body. That was all an ectoplasmic being really was if you narrowed it down, a ball of energy.
The currents sent the ectoplasm churning. It could be compared to blood without the veins or arteries holding it back.
Like insects, Fenton remembered. An open circulatory system.
The only thing keeping the 'blood' from seeping out was the thin but hard outer shell. The skin, if you will.
Fenton was too fascinated by all he was finding out he forgot what he was supposed to be doing.
He found something else. That ghostly DNA his parents had talked about. Or....he guessed it was DNA. It wasn't the usual twisted ladder form, his microscopic insight could tell that much. They were many different small blotches of information. All bundled together or floating around.
This must be where all the cow's genes and personality traits where decoded. Fenton wondered how his halfa form had it.
Speaking of personalities, do ghosts have brains?
