Today is the day I leave my home in Egypt behind and move to Paris where I know I will be safer. My parents and my younger brother were assassinated, and the priest suggested I move to Paris; the assassins would have a pretty hard time finding me in a remote place like this. I arrive at the airport and am greeted by Mayor Bourgeois; my uncle--who's the only family to survive the assassination-- arranged for the mayor to pick me up along with a bodyguard. My Bodyguard grabs my luggage as I walk toward the mayor.
"Welcome to Paris, Princess Iris. I hope you had a pleasant flight."
I bow, "Thank you, Mayor Bourgeois. I'm thankful for you helping me." I said in a sad monotone.
"It's what your family would've wanted." He smiles gently.
I nod. The pain of losing my family still burns like a fire in my heart.
"Shall we?" He motions toward the door and I follow.
Without saying a word, I get into the limo and look out the window. Paris is strange; I miss the openness, the sand, the rivers, my family, my people. We arrive at a giant mansion, I sigh, get out, and am greeted by a tall blond man with glasses. He stares at me and I stare back at him; just as then a teenage boy comes out of the house- blonde just like the man but with no glasses, maybe a little bit taller than me- he helps with my luggage.
"My name is Gabriel Agreste, I will be your caretaker from now on." His voice is deep, stoic, almost business-like.
"Thank you, Mr. Agreste. I appreciate what you are doing for me." I bow to him.
"Adrien, please show her to her room." Mr. Agreste leaves most likely to tend to business.
He reminds me much of my father when he was still alive and pharaoh. My father, like Mr. Agreste, was a businessman; always made deals with the surrounding kingdoms. However, unlike Mr. Agreste, my father was kind, caring, and had hilarious moments.
The boy escorts me to a large room with a balcony. I don't pay too much attention to the room, considering that I feel like a fly being trapped in a spider's web, and unable to free myself.
"Hi, I'm Adrien," the boy greets.
Now I know his name, I feel as if I speak now my voice will be lost forever. But, I still manage to nod my head in response to his greeting; I look out the balcony, gazing up at the cloudless sky. I feel Adrien standing beside me, however, I know he is not looking up at the sky like I am. He is looking somewhere else, I wonder what's on his mind, but I know better not to ponder.
"Beautiful isn't it?" he said.
I nod. "Yes, very."
There's nothing like this back in Egypt, no city lights, no streets, just sand. Yes, there were cloudless blue skies during the day, and during the night you can see all the stars and constellations, but it was a sight, and I miss it dearly. But I know I can't go back right now, for my protection.
Adrien looks at me with his bright jungle green eyes, his eyes are probably the brightest green I've ever seen. His blond hair shines like the gold bands on my neck, almost as if Ra himself makes Adrien's blonde hair shine so brightly in the sunlight.
He pulls me into an unexpected hug. "I want you to know you are not alone. If you ever need to talk, I'm here." He smiles ever so gently.
His smile is contagious, so I can't help myself but smile back at him. "Thank you, Adrien. You make this transition easier for me. I appreciate it, very much."
He unwraps his arms from around me after a long, but comfortable silence. He leaves the room to let me get settled in, I unpack and realize what time it was. I suppose it gets late here earlier than it does in Egypt. After unpacking, I'll look up at the stars again; I think about my parents and my brother Atemun. I think of my parents' arms around me as I welcome them home, I think of how I and Atemun used to play in the courtyard after school. I think of how my father would come into my room at night, and check my room to make sure there are no monsters; he used to do the same with my brother. I envision them smiling at me, and think of what I must do to keep my family's line going proud, strong, and victorious. I know I have to make my mother, father, and brother proud.
