I showed Mike out to the backyard where there was an old trampoline lying in the corner, it came with the house and it was too rusty to use, and we didn't know what to do with it. We didn't know whether to pick out the parts we, excuse me; I, could use, or just throw the whole thing away as a whole.
But I've been too lazy and busy to do anything about it. We had a decent sized yard but it was never used. The grass was turning a frosty blue green color with the season and the small water droplets, almost like dew, on the blades of grass made them sparkle in the dim sunlight.
Mike pulled out a speaker from his backpack, which he set on a lawn chair we put back there.
"Okay, so let's just start with some basics," were the last words before I broke out in a sweat every second and nearly broke my ankle trying to stand my my tippy toes.He taught me to dance to the song Attention by Charlie Puth, which I actually liked and by the end of our session he was barley sweating and I was pouring. I threw my hair up into a messy bun and I rolled my leggings up, thank god I shaved the night before. I was sat on the ground with my back on the wall of the house listening to his playlist on shuffle.
"You have good taste in music," I complimented as he came back outside with a bottle of water in hand. He took a sip and sat next to me. By then the sun was setting and the cool brisk air was coming back, cooling me off in it's presence.
"Why, thank you," he smiled, settling into his spot on the back porch. He had his knee propped up resting his muscular arm upon it. I exhaled a deep breath before turning to look at him.
"Do you think I can seriously help you guys win Sectionals?" I asked in all seriousness. He turned to look at me which for some weird reason made me want to smile, but I refused.
"Absolutely. You have an amazing voice. And in some ways, better then Rachel's. Which is saying a lot cause she's our star," he said taking another sip of water. He set the bottle down on the ground, looking out over our fence to see the sun setting.
I chewed at the inside of my lip as I watched the sunset. "I love the sunsets here," I said, examining the orange, purple, and blue sky. It was intense. The sweat sticking to my skin ran cold when the cool breeze of October ran through the hair on my arms. It got really cold at night and a decent seventy degrees during the day. I shivered and held my arms closer to my body.
"We should uh, get back inside. It's getting cold," I said with a nervous smile. Mike looked over at me, which erupted a fit of butterflies into my stomach. I took a deep breath looking back at him, with those beautiful dark brown eyes and that smooth tan skin.
"Yeah," he quickly looked away, shaking his head slightly. He got up, dusting the dirt off his jeans, and extended a hand out towards me. I looked up and grabbed his hand. It was rough, and warm, and the small contact seemed to only last a second.
He pulled open our sliding glass door and allowed me to go in first. Then I could hear the door close behind me. I found Andy on the couch on his laptop that was around five years old. "It's about time. You guys have been at it for hours," Andy closed the laptop and set it on the coffee table in front of him.
"Has it been that long already?" I smiled nervously at my brother before letting my hair out of its bun to lay against my shoulders.
The way Andy was looking at me... It was one I was actually struggling to read. He seemed protective, but also vulnerable, and he looked irritated but laid back. So I just didn't understand how to read my brother, and it really bothered me.
I heard a buzz come from behind me, making me glance over my shoulder. Mike was then looking at his phone. "I gotta get home" is all he said at first. "My mom wants me home for dinner," he said and almost as if on cue, the door swung open and our dad came strutting in.
He closed the door, looking around the living room. He came in looking from Andy to me, and then to Mike. "Who are you?" he asked in a friendly manner. I quietly sighed and sat on the couch next to Andy.
"I'm Mike Chang. I'm on the football team with Andy and in Glee with Autumn," that was the first time I've heard him call me by my real name and not 'Pearl Harbor'.
Mike extended his hand to shake my dad's. Mike and my dad were about the same height around 5'11 and my dad gladly shook his hand. I couldn't help but play a little smile on my face. I quickly wiped it clean though and looked over at Andy. He looked back at me, still with that unreadable look on his face.
"I'll um. I'll drive you home Mikey," Andy got up off the couch and over to his friend. Mike awkwardly made it around my dad and out the door with Mike.
"Does he not have a car?" Dad asked setting his portfolio of art and letters down on the bar.
I shook my head. ""No he got his motorcycle stolen a couple days ago. So now we bring him to and from school," I smiled slightly at the thought of helping someone in need. I liked carpooling. It was a whole lot more interesting then driving all by yourself. And luckily I've been fortunate enough to have my brother to ride with me everyday.
"That's unfortunate. It's nice how you and your brother are helping him," my Dad said as he made his way into the kitchen.
"Does he give you gas money?" my Dad asked, taking a sip of soda he got form the fridge.
"No. He's done enough for Andy and I. He works out with Andy and helps me with my dancing," I explained. I still had to keep quiet about how I was a small fraction of the reason he lost his bike in the first place. Sneaking me out to see a movie and all. I would have both the men in my life worry about me and I did not want that.
"Oh... he dances? What sort of dancing?" now he was just being nosey.
"The good kind. Uh, can I go to my room now. I'm kinda beat. I had to learn two numbers today and I'm as active as the couch," I told my dad as I got to my feet. He sighed and nodded his head, knowing I was gonna go up there anyways. He was the kind of parent that wanted to be included in what his children were doing while not wanting to be too nosey, but he had to know enough to understand. But sometimes he just didn't learn that some things we needed to work out ourselves.
I ran up the steps and into my room. I went into my old desktop and went into YouTube, playing a whole bunch of random songs while I sang along and texted Mike.
A: I'm sorry about my dad...
M: It's cool. I expected something a lot more scary lol
A: Rlly like what?
M: Like a crazy overprotective dad that didn't want his little girl getting hurt
A: No... that still sounds like him lol
M: Yeah well. At least he seems nice. He didn't say anything too offensive about me when I left, did he?
A: Just asked if you had a car and what kind of dancing you did. Just the normal crazy standard of my father
M: And what'd u say?
A: 'the good kind' and then I went to my room. I didn't know how to answer that question lmao
M: Oh wowwwww
A: Yeah, its not like I can tell him you're a pole dancer now can I XDThen there was a long pause and I turned my music up a little louder as I tried not to think too much about offending him with that comment. I heard a text pop up from my phone after a few minutes. I went back to sit on my bed and snuggled up into my giant bear that I used as a pillow that Andy got me once for my thirteenth birthday. I don't think I ever grew up.
M: I just got home, sry
A: Cool. I don't care how long it takes you. This is nice what we have. A good friendshipMentally I told myself to stop but my thumb had already hit send. It made my stomach twist, I didn't know if he thought we were friends or not so I was worried for a little while there.
M: Thx, and I agree. Idk but I haven't had a friend I trust as much as I do u
A: I trust u too idk why tho
M: Trust makes u do strange thingsI'm sorry I couldn't help myself. I had to put a little Magnus in it, I just felt the vibe. I'm sorry. I hope you guys are enjoying though. I love yall!
